Clear strike at right of 1840 folded cover addressed to "His Excellency
W. H. Seward, Albany N.Y." and forwarded to Auburn N.Y., red "New York
Jul. 1" circular datestamp with matching "Paid" crossed out, rated "18-3/4"
and with Albany datestamp also of July 1, faint vertical file folds, fresh
and Very Fine, this oval handstamp depicting a full-rigged ship was applied
to mail forward to naval personnel from the the U.S. Naval Lyceum in
Brooklyn, in this case it was likely used as an origination handstamp, the
recipient would become Secretary of State under Lincoln (Image) |
