Paid Oct. 18" circular datestamp, manuscript "15" for triple 5c rate, endorsed "Via Humboldt" (American Packet), struck in New York with red "U.S. STEAMSHIP/POSTAGE NOT PAID" two-line handstamp and routed via Cunard steamer Asia, arriving Liverpool Nov. 2, Paris receiving datestamp and French due markings, file fold, Very Fine and rare use of this handstamp with fewer than five examples recorded, accompanied by Richard F. Winter article from Chronicle 136 discussing this handstamp, which was used briefly when letters routed via American Packet were underpaid for the required 21c rate (Image)
