24c Carmine Rose & Blue, 1918 Air Post (C3). Tied by "Air Mail Service Wash. N.Y. Phila. Washington May 17 9 AM 1918" duplex datestamp on cover to New Rochelle N.Y., carried on Lieutenant George L. Boyle's second attempt to fly the mails, which, like his first on May 15, resulted in a crash landing and delayed mail, backstamped New York May 18, 4:30AM, reflecting late arrival of airmail from Washington D.C., with original contents, small piece of backflap missing, minor light staining on front, otherwise Very Fine, only four reported covers from this flight -- After his notorious failed first flight on May 15 (the first day of government airmail service), Lt. Boyle was given another opportunity to fly the mail from Washington D.C. to Philadelphia on May 17. He was instructed to keep "Chesapeake Bay on your right." Lt. Boyle was escorted by Maj. Fleet in another plane as far as Baltimore, then Boyle proceeded on his own, keeping Chesapeake Bay on his right, which caused him to fly far off course. He ran out of fuel once and refueled at Cape Charles Va., 200 miles south of Philadelphia. After getting directions, he took off and ran out of fuel again, this time crashing his plane at the Philadelphia Country Club at 7:18PM. The late-arriving mail was put on a train for New York. Atomic Bomb Test, "Operation Crossroads", Bikini Atoll, "Able Day" July 1, 1946. Interesting group of material incl. three covers with various 6c franking tied by U.S. Navy Fleet Post Office Jul 1 A.M. 1946 "Atomic Bomb Test Bikini Atoll" duplexes (one a bit roughly opened at top), great four -page handwritten letter describing trip from the States to Bikini Atoll, describes the arrangement of the huge target fleet, "The Nevada is at zero & is painted bright orange. Other ships are the Nagato, Prinz Eigen, Arkansas, Saratoga... the lighted ships around us look like the view of Jersey City from Manhattan", a printed menu from the USS Panamint and a letter from Col. Batte to General Ulio regarding his efforts in obtaining a bomb test postmark, a fascinating group of material

Large Numeral Postage Due Issue Domestic Covers. 73+ covers incl. a few postal stationery items, all bearing Large Numeral Postage Due stamps up to the 30c value, hand-selected for unusual frankings and character including rejected 5c 1888 bisect and attempted illegal use of revenue stamps, advertising and exposition covers, Special Delivery frankings, large Valentine, unusual cancels incl. Heart-punch (Baltimore) and blue New York oval (very rare), the single most valuable item is a Publisher's Weekly package label on front with regular Bank Note issues and 96c postage due paid by 2c, 10c and two 30c No. J19, some minor faults but condition is generally excellent

We feel our estimate is conservative and does not factor in the enormous labor and transaction costs that would be necessary to build such a collection up from scratch.
