German Union.", red "New York Paid All Direct" circular datestamp with unclear date on back, matching "5" (cents) handstamp on front for double 2.5c credit to N.G.U., red framed Bremen transit datestamp and re-stated postage of "WF 2" (Sgr.) in red crayon, edgewear causing faults on stamps at top, two 3c stamps defective, still a Fine appearing and striking three denomination franking, the rates to Denmark by N.G.U. mails listed in the U.S. Postal Guide were 13c prepaid and 16c unpaid, the Hartford mail clerk apparently experienced significant confusion on this point as a number of the covers from this correspondence are overpaid, if the missing stamp was a 1c this cover would have been prepaid at the 32c unpaid double-rate, illustrated in a Chronicle article by Michael Laurence which accompanies (No. 94, p. 106) (Image)
