Jul. 31, 1898" datestamp at top left, endorsed "Soldiers Letter" at top and signed "A.M. Diggles", also endorsed "Major 13th Minnesota," part of state name obscured by stamp, receiving backstamp and crayon docketing on back, slightly reduced at left where opened, some soiling, still Fine, rare use with Steamer St. Paul marking, American soldiers, called "The Boys in Blue" by the Hawaiians, were warmly greeted en route to the Philippines, the Hawaiian government allowed soldiers to send letters home with the postage paid by Official stamps, the 13th Minnesota arrived in Manila on August 7, 1898 and participated in the Battle of Manila under General Arthur MacArthur and the 1899 Philippine uprising, Arthur M. Diggles died in Manila in May, 1899 (Image)
