708° ogbl Image1893, 6c Green, Category II Double Red Ovpt. (60e). Block of 25 with imprint selvage at both sides, every stamp with clear second overprint split horizontally, original gum, slightly tropicalized on some and few h.r., deep rich color, some reinforced perf separations and gum creases

THIS IS THE LARGEST KNOWN MULTIPLE OF THE 1893 6-CENT PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT ISSUE WITH DOUBLE RED OVERPRINT. A SPECTACULAR RARITY.

Based on the examples observed, at least three 6c sheets were doubly overprinted in red. The Scott Catalogue lists this stamp only with a Category II double overprint, although a single with a strong second overprint is shown at www.hawaiianstamps.com, and the pair offered in this sale (lot 709) certainly appears to be of Category I strength. The Honolulu Advertiser collection contained a part-imprint horizontal block of 10 with a Category II double overprint, and the block of four in the Pietsch sale probably came from the same sheet as the Advertiser block. The block of 25 offered here is a third source of double overprints, also of Category II strength.

Scott Retail for a single Category II double overprint is $1,000.00 (Image)

709° og Image1893, 6c Green, "Category II" Double Red Ovpt. (60e var). Horizontal pair, original gum, h.r., clear impression of "Provisional" of second overprint on each stamp, bright color, horizontal gum creases, otherwise Fine, the Scott Catalogue only lists Category II double overprint for this issue, but the strength of the second overprint on this pair appears to us to qualify for Category I (another single of this strength can be found at www.hawaiianstamps.com), Scott Retail as two Category II double overprints is $2,000.00, but this pair should be worth much more (Image)
