384° ngbl Image1863, 1c Black, Grayish (15). Plate 4-A, block of eight comprising the first eight types and positions on the plate, Position 4 with serif intact, unused (no gum), accompanying certificate notes the paper shade as "dark grayish", large margins all around, light horizontal creases not mentioned on accompanying certificate, small thin spot in margin only at far left opposite Position 5, few light age spots

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE UNUSED BLOCK OF EIGHT OF THE 1863 ONE-CENT BLACK NUMERAL ON GRAYISH PAPER. THIS BLOCK, WITH THE SERIF COMPLETE ON TYPE IV, IS UNIQUE.

Accompanied by correspondence from Westerberg comprising two letters. The first (dated 1964) congratulates Mr. Golden on the acquisition of the block in the Taylor sale and comments on the paper shade and apparent availability of paper in Hawaii when the Numerals were printed. The second (dated 1967) details Westerberg's realization that Position 4 has the full serif. He notes that the serif must have broken off at an early stage of printing. He recorded only one single with similar margins (ex Clapp), and this block provided Westerberg with the verification he needed for the position, just before publishing his plating study in 1968.

Ex Taylor. Illustrated in the Westerberg book on p. 48. With 1964 P.F. certificate. Scott Retail as two blocks of four with no premium for the intact serif position (Image)
