VERY FINE. AN BEAUTIFUL FRANKING FOR THE 10-CENT TRANSCONTINENTAL RATE PLUS 2-CENT SHIP CAPTAIN'S FEE. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE PART IMPRINT ON THE ONE-CENT STAMP.

This cover was carried on the bark Comet, which departed Honolulu on Nov. 26 and arrived in San Francisco on Dec. 18. It was postmarked Dec. 21 for the Friday departure of Butterfield's overland stagecoach.

VERY FINE. A RARE TRIPLE-RATE FRANKING WITH THE 10-CENT AND 12-CENT 1857-59 ISSUE.

This cover was carried on the Yankee, which departed Honolulu on May 20 and arrived in San Francisco on June 4. By this point the Butterfield Southern Route to St. Louis via Los Angeles was closed (Apr. 5, 1861), due to disruption from the Civil War. From April until July 1, 1861, letter mail for the East and Europe was routed via Panama on the regular steamer service. Commencing July 1, the Central Route was used as the contract overland mail and stage route.
