Aug. 25" (1871) duplex datestamp and "flower petals" cork cancel on grocer's corner card cover to Manchester, England, red "New York Aug. 29" circular datestamp, Manchester receiving backstamp (Sep. 8)

EXTREMELY FINE. A "PERFECT" SINGLE FRANKING OF THE 24-CENT 1870 NATIONAL BANK NOTE ISSUE, PAYING QUADRUPLE RATE TO ENGLAND.

The 24c 1870 Issue is rarely found used alone on cover. In this case the 24c stamp is used to pay the quadruple 6c U.S.-G.B. treaty rate on a standard-size cover (unusual for its weight classification). The corner card and attractive Louisville postmark and cancellation (an unusual origin for transatlantic covers) enhance the visual appeal of this scarce use. (Image)

Stevens, London, Aug. 13, 1874" oval datestamp, blue "DEPARTMENT OF STATE" straightline handstamp, slightly reduced at top, some edgewear and small tear, still Very Fine, sent by diplomatic pouch from Ireland to the Department of State in Washington D.C. (handled by B. F. Stevens), then posted by mail to Massachusetts, probably personal correspondence which should have had foreign postage paid, ex Albert and Barwis (Image)
