The popular children's song of the same name was written by Thomas Brigham Bishop (who also wrote "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" and other famous patriotic songs). EXTREMELY FINE STRIKE OF THE DESIRABLE HAT FANCY CANCELLATION OF BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT. THIS IS THE FIRST EXAMPLE WE HAVE OFFERED SINCE KEEPING COMPUTERIZED RECORDS.

Connecticut was the location of numerous hat manufacturers during the mid-19th century. The brilliant Red Top Hat of Danbury is one of the most famous designs. This Bridgeport Hat is extremely rare.

VERY FINE STRIKE OF THE DESIRABLE ADRIAN LARGE BEE FANCY CANCELLATION. VERY FEW ARE KNOWN ON COVER.

The post offices at Adrian Mich., Conestoga N.Y. and Waterbury Conn. used very similar Large Bee fancy cancels during the same time period. One wonders if mail passing through each other's office provided the inspiration to whittling postal clerks.
