Medcalf. 39 Bow-ditch St. Lowell, Mass.", fresh and Extremely Fine, only five or six examples of this enigmatic "United States" handstamp are recorded, although it is similar to U.S.-Canada cross-border markings, none are addressed to Canada, and it is generally agreed that it represents carrier service in Lowell, this example is the earliest we have recorded, the "Paid 6" rate indicates a pre-1851 usage (5c postage plus 1c carrier fee, this small cover was unlikely overweight), all the other examples we record contain 3c integral-rate datestamps (Image)
