VERY FINE. THIS IS THE EARLIEST REPORTED COVER IN PRIVATE HANDS WITH A POSTMARK FROM WHAT IS NOW MAINE. IT PREDATES THE OTHER RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS MARKING BY A YEAR. A PHENOMENAL RARITY OF THE BRITISH COLONIAL PERIOD.

During this period Maine was attached to Massachusetts. Falmouth at the time incorporated the areas now containing Portland, South Portland, Cape Elizabeth and Westbrook. Its postmark is the only one known from Maine during the British Colonial period. The other example in private hands, ex Siskin, is a Dec. 19, 1770, inbound folded letter from Charlestown Mass. to Falmouth, which was forwarded to Portsmouth. (Image)
