Pond (later to become Brigadier General Pond) to his brother Ensign Charles Pond (to become Rear Admiral Pond) at the "USS Hassler" in San Francisco and then forwarded to "Smith Ranch". USS Hassler was actually CS (Coastal Survey) vessel, the Coastal Survey being the fore-runner to today's NOAA. Back stamp four-line "SAN FRANCISCO/CAL./JUL 28 1880/REGISTERED/: Condition is very good though scissors were used to open envelope and no contents. Nice! (Image)
