LotNo. CatNo. Lot Description
1519   imageRoller Coaster. Roller Coaster. United States

Postcards -- Two Revere Beach 1930s roller coaster postcards - Cyclone and Thompson Scenic Railway Two unused and fresh 1930s postcards of roller coaster rides at Revere Beach Amusement Park, Massachusetts. The Cyclone was a wooden roller coaster at Revere Beach from 1925 until 1969. When Cyclone was constructed, it was the tallest roller coaster ever built, as well as the first roller coaster in the world to reach 100 feet (30 m) in height. Some claim it was the largest and fastest roller coaster in the world, with a length of 3,600 feet (1,100 m) and top speeds between 45 and 50 mph. Given its location near the Atlantic Ocean, Cyclone endured much damage throughout the years from ocean storms, flooding, and blizzards. Despite the abuse, it was a fire that destroyed the Cyclone. LaMarcus Adna Thompson obtained a patent regarding roller coasters made of wood in 1885 that included dark tunnels with painted scenery. Thompson Scenic Railways were to be found in amusement parks across the county. The roller coaster at Revere Beach was among his first. (Image1)
