Antarctica
LotNo. CatNo. Lot Description
260   imageByrd Expedition. Byrd Expedition. Antarctica

Antarctica -- Byrd Antarctic Expedition II cover with Quin A. Blackburn letter Historic find. Short note from and signed by Quin A. Blackburn from Little America Antarctica to a friend in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Mailed from the Bay of Whales, Antarctica. Extremely rare. Unique! Blackburn, an American geologist, was leader of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition II geological party which sledged the length of Scott Glacier in December 1834. Mount Blackburn, a massive, flat-topped mountain, 10,745 feet high, standing just east of Antarctica’s Scott Glacier where it surmounts the southwest end of California Plateau and the Watson Escarpment, in the Queen Maud Mountains was discovered by Blackburn and named for him. The Paramount Pictures stamp on the back is unusual and reflects the company's documentary involvement with the expedition. It notes they have opened the Penguin Theater there.
