1413 P 1898 2c Black, lavender and carmine Imperial Penny Postage, hybrid large die proof, attractive proof with exceptionally attractive and fresh colors, carefully trimmed around the frame and die sunk on original card measuring 150x106mm, trivial edg1898 2c Black, lavender and carmine Imperial Penny Postage, hybrid large die proof, attractive proof with exceptionally attractive and fresh colors, carefully trimmed around the frame and die sunk on original card measuring 150x106mm, trivial edge tear to card at top, a brilliantly fresh proof, choice very fine; it was standard practice among bank note companies, and the American Bank Note Co. in particular, to make hybrid die proofs of stamps that had more than one color and required more than one pass through the printing press to complete, the reason for this was that the proof press and the dies were not set up for easy registration and the way die proofs were manufactured made it very difficult to print multiple colors in the traditional way, this was particularly true with this stamp which required one engraved and two typographed impressions, it was far easier to take a finished plate proof and sink it on card which not only looked like an ordinary die proof but was used in the same way for file records and for approval by both the bank note company and the Post Office Department; it is quite likely all of the very few known die proofs of this issue are hybrids; an extremely rare and handsome proof; ex-T. 1415 Pog Postmaster Generals proof document addressing the production of the 1898 2c Imperial Penny Postage stamp, written on Postmaster Generals stationery with violet embossed crest at left and colorless Private Secretarys Office embossed at right,Postmaster General's proof document addressing the production of the 1898 2c Imperial Penny Postage stamp, written on Postmaster General's stationery with violet embossed crest at left and colorless "Private Secretary's Office" embossed at right, affixed to the front and back is a set of three progressive plate proofs with handwritten explanation that the first impression was in black, the 2nd impression was the carmine of the the British possessions and the last impression adding the color for the oceans, the description concludes with "These are really not stamps, never having been gummed or perforated, but are intended merely to show the process of printing. They are the only stamps in the world requiring three distinct printings...", an issued stamp is shown at the end.The traditional theory, presented by Boggs, Volume I, p341, asserted that the black was printed first, then the oceans and finally the carmine. This document confirms beyond doubt that the carmine typographed plate was printed before the other typographed plate. This document was used as the basis of an article in Maple Leaves January 1993, Whole no. 241, pp9-11.This document was originally owned by Allen Whalen as a very young collector in his teens. In 1952 an Ottawa collector offered to trade a $10,000.00 house for the sheet, but Whalen refused. This was in the days when $10,000.00 was a lot of money.
