FRESNO AND SAN FRANCISCO BICYCLE
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1027 c 12L1 image#12L1, Bicycle Mail Route, California, 25c Green, original error die, tied to an unusual and extremely rare bicycle cover to San Francisco with this rare uncorrected Bicycle stamp tied by black bars cancel, 2c Carmine tied by black target with "Gilroy/Cal./Jul. 14" c.d.s. at left, backstamped San Francisco on the same day, return handstamp for San Francisco on the front and the bicycle handstamp on the reverse is strangely dated July 11,1894, blue crayon "135" in top left corner is purported to be Banta's letter register number, very fine; it is not exactly clear where this cover originated, normally the stamp was cancelled at the destination after being carried on the bicycle post, the July 11th date would imply that it was posted in Fresno, but the Gilroy cancel from a town halfway along the route suggests it may have originated there, regardless this appears to be a commercial cover to the California Savings and Loan Society in San Francisco and the only example of which we are aware that is postmarked in Gilroy, California; ex-Bleuler. (Image) Est. $1,500-2,000

SOLD for $2,600.00
Will close during Public Auction

Sellschopp, was a 19th century San Francisco stamp dealer, when he heard that the strike had ended he undoubtedly contacted Banta to send him some covers, this and the previous lot would be examples of these having been carried on probably the last trip and being some of the most attractive carried covers; ex-Bleuler. SOLD for $3,000.00
