1937 HINDENBURG CRASH COVERS
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
235 c Sieger #454Aa imageSieger #454Aa, 1937 First North American Flight of the "Hindenburg" resulting in the infamous crash of the airship on May 6th at Lakehurst, New Jersey, a well preserved large portion of a cover that was recovered by the Zeppelin Company in its clean up of the crash site and wreckage (Falk Type IV), addressed to Mr. Jules Lopez of New York City, franked by 50pf and 75pf Zeppelin singles, tied by "Frankfurt (Main)/Bahnpostampt 19/Auslands-/Stelle/2. 5. 37." c.d.s. and receiving the general Zeppelin flight cachet with the index letter c of the railway post office, charred around three sides but leaving the stamps largely complete and not affecting the postmark or cachet, extremely fine. The crash and burning of the "Hindenburg" was horrendous, certainly with the loss of life and injury, but also with the total extent of the destruction of the Zeppelin and its contents in a matter of minutes. Records show that there were well over 17,000 pieces of mail on board the air ship at the time of the crash. Yet, only 368 pieces of mail of all types were recovered. Only 185 pieces of outbound mail destined to be delivered at Lakehurst were recovered by the U.S Postal inspectors or the Zeppelin Company in their selvage efforts. The outstanding crash cover offered here is not only exceptional in its completeness and attractive appearance, but it is also a rare type of posting of which there are very few known. Being posted at the railroad station in Frankfurt is a less usual type of posting for Zeppelin mail. It is distinguished not only by the postmark tying the Zeppelin set, but the cachet, which is well struck and well preserved, has the index letter "c" and was assigned to this railroad station post office. Only a very few pieces of mail that were salvaged have this cachet. A wonderful and great "Hindenburg" rarity. Accompanied by 1992 SIA certificate and signed by Arthur Falk, H.W. Sieger and Dr. Oertel (Sieger €17,500; Michel #63a). (Image) Est. 15,000-20,000

236 c Sieger #454 var. imageSieger #454 var., 1937 First North American Flight of the "Hindenburg" resulting in the infamous crash of the airship on May 6th at Lakehurst, New Jersey, a most unusual and significant piece of mail salvaged from the wreckage of the Hindenburg (Falk Type IV var.), consisting of the center portion of a business size envelope showing a portion of the corner card of the Chrysler Corporation and a Detroit, Michigan c.d.s. dated March 1, 1937, addressed to Rudolf Sauter, the Chief Engineer of the "Hindenburg", also includes a large portion of the one page enclosure on Chrysler Corp. stationery of the Export Division also dated March 1, 1937 and extending an invitation to visit Detroit soon, the portion of the cover is well charred, as are the sides of the enclosure, but most of the contents of the letter are intact and easily read, very fine; this letter had been sent to Mr. Sauter in March and he carried it on board with him on the flight to the United States, Mr. Sauter was injured and hospitalized but survived the crash and lived until the 1960's, his salvaged personal belongings, including this letter, were recovered by the Zeppelin Company of New York and forwarded to him, this cover was sold by his estate after his death; because of the unusual nature of why this letter was on the Zeppelin, Arthur Falk notes that this is the only piece of United States to Germany mail that was recovered from the crash; an interesting and important piece of crash mail from one of the most famous air disasters in history; this particular type of mail listed by neither Sieger nor Michel; both the cover and enclosure signed by Arthur Falk and accompanied by 1991 SIA certificate (Michel #63 var.).
