1141 ng Unitrade #CLP6 imageUnitrade #CLP6, 1927 25c London (Ontario) to London (England) flight, a magnificently centered unused example of this world-class air post rarity, possessing large balanced margins all around, the dark green and yellow colors are strong and bright, accompanying certificate states some light soiling, which is truly minimal, and thin spot at bottom left, neither of which detracts from this stamp's extremely fine appearance; actually this example is in a much higher quality and of more attractive appearance than the majority of the very few copies in private hands. The history of this rarity and the tragic flight that brought it about is most fascinating (see the recent issue of "Scott Stamp Monthly" for the story of this flight). The owners of the Carling Brewing company decided to sponsor an aviation competition as a publicity project. The company supplied a state-of-the-art airplane named the "Sir John Carling" and selected Captain Terrence B. Tully and Lieutenant James Medcalf as the pilots, who would receive a prize of $25,000.00 if they successfully completed the flight from London, Ontario to London, England. The attempts went badly from the start. An attempt on August 29, 1927 from London, Ontario was turned back because of bad weather. The second attempt was made from St. John's, Newfoundland on September 7, 1927. The plane departed with 300 gallons of fuel and the mail they had brought from the original attempt in London. Inexplicably, in weather that was described as good and favorable, the "Sir John Carling" completely disappeared somewhere over the Atlantic and no wreckage was ever found. The rarity of this semi-official air post stamp is tied to the fate of this doomed transatlantic attempt. Only 100 of the special stamps were issued. Needless to say, the vast majority were used on covers that were lost with the plane (one cover, which was overlooked or removed from the mail after the first attempt, is known). Since then only nine mint or unused examples have ever been recorded, the example offered here being the ninth and newest discovery. Two of these are in philatelic collections of the British Library and are not available to collectors. Only one premium mint corner margin single is known, last selling in 1971. Of the remaining six examples all have faults or are poorly centered, or both. This new discovery is, by far, the most attractive of these six with its impeccable centering. A great air mail rarity that is ideally suited for exhibition. Accompanied by 2006 Greene Foundation certificate. (Image) Unitrade C$50,000.00
