1940-1956 LARGE DIE PROOFS continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
821 P 898P1 image#898P1, 3c Coronado Expedition, large die proof on India, die sunk on card measuring 154x123mm, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reads "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, bright attractive, very fine; a very rare proof and another case of a second engraver's proof appearing, this possibly pulled for J.S. Edmondson, the letter engraver and without security punch as the Brooks' proof had; V.S. McCloskey, designer; C.A. Brooks, vignette engraver; control number 651278A (1940). (Image) $1,100.00

SOLD for $700.00
Will close during Public Auction
822 P 905P1a image#905P1a, 3c Win the War, large die proof on wove, die sunk on card measuring 130x146mm, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reads "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, evidently displayed in sunlight as the color has faded, tiny corner flaw to the wove proof paper, fine; still an extremely rare and quite possibly unique proof, as this issue was not previously known in a large die proof and is not listed as such in Scott; furthermore, this proof lends credence to the theory that this small find of proofs largely came into public hands through J.S. Edmondson, as he is the only engraver that worked on this issue for both the vignette and the lettering; Mark O'Dea & W.A. Roach, designers; J.S. Edmondson, vignette engraver; control number 737107A (1942) (Image) Est. 400-500

SOLD for $1,250.00
Will close during Public Auction
823 P 974P1a image#974P1a, 3c Girl Scouts, large die proof on wove paper, die sunk on full size card measuring 203x155mm, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, no name on this proof but J.S. Edmondson was the letter engraver on this also and very few proofs are associated with G.A. Gundersen, the vignette engraver, "C" security punch taped back in place (a normal practice), exceptionally fresh with strong rich color, choice very fine; this proof has not been recorded before and is unlisted by Scott; certainly a very rare proof of this popular topic that may be the only example in collectors' hands; W.K. Schrage, designer; G.A. Gundersen, vignette engraver; control number 960337A (1948). (Image) Est. 750-1,000

SOLD for $950.00

824 P 1010P1a image#1010P1a, 3c Lafayette, large die proof on wove paper, die sunk on full size card measuring 203x152mm, Bureau handstamp on the reverse reading "Engraver's Stock Proof/Authorized by" and initialed, "C" security punch taped back in place (a normal practice), exceptionally attractive bright color, choice very fine; this is another example of a second engraver's proof appearing (probably J.S. Edmondson), the three-hole punched proof of C.A. Brooks, the vignette engraver was offered in our June 2006 sale of the W. Curtis Livingston Collection, listed by Scott only on India, however both of these are on wove paper and probably does not exist on India; (Image) Est. 750-1,000

Curtis Livingston Collection, this second proof is probably from J.S. Edmondson, the letter engraver, these are the only two recorded, listed by Scott on India but unpriced, however both of these are on wove paper and it probably does not exist on India; (Image) Est. 750-1,000

Curtis Livingston Collection the only recorded examples, listed by Scott only on India though both of these are on wove paper and it probably does not exist on India; W.K. Schrage, designer; C.A. Chickering, designer; J.S. Edmondson, vignette engraver; control number 131380B (1953). (Image) Est. 750-1,000
