"Memphis, Te" pmk. on cover free franked by Postmaster W.H. Burton, the rest have c.d.s. postmarks in various colors of black, blue and red, and largely distinguished by the way Tennessee is abbreviated, these include an example of the earliest marking abbreviated "Te" with the letter "e" high, the collection includes various rate markings with covers sent both prepaid and due, normal cover flaws are present for this period, condition ranges from fine-very fine. 503 c imageNashville, Tennessee desirable stampless cover collection tracing the early postal history of Nashville from 1800 to 1854, 26 in all, the earliest cover is a September 7, 1800 cover from the Henley correspondence with the small "NASHVILLE, T. Sept 7" straight line handstamp (26x2mm) and a second strike on "Sep 21" (without the "t") on the same cover, there is a slave-carried 1801 cover with that fact confirmed in the contents, we count five other different straight line cancels between 1808 and 1813 plus three different ovals including an unlisted variety with "Tennessee" inverted, various others with c.d.s. postmarks and rates, four are foreign mail covers to Great Britain and Europe including an 1817 fancy boxed "Belfast/Ship Letter", condition varies with some fold breaks on some of the early covers, overall fine-very fine and a wonderful documentation of the scarce postal history of this city. MAR. 7." straight line postmark, type measuring 34x3mm, on 1806 court deposition to the Muhlenburgh Circuit Court in Kentucky, the deposition is from a physician who treated ulcers on the leg of a negro boy over a period of seven to eight months, ms. 506 c image"Nashville/T/May29" blue c.d.s. postmark on 1838 folded cover to Matagorda, Republic of Texas, sent via New Orleans with blue "Paid" and ms. "25" rate marking, put aboard a gulf steamer with scarce red "Steampacket/Columbia" two-line handstamp, to Galveston where a beautiful strike of "Galveston/Texas/June 18, 38" ornamented oval was applied, old rate crossed out and new rate of "56 1/4" was collected consisting of 50c Texas rate and 6 1/4c ship fee, very fine and attractive; a wonderful cover with a rare combination of scarce markings. 507 c image"Nashville/Te/Jan 19" blue c.d.s. on 1847 folded letter, originally posted to Dresden in Weakly Co. Tennessee with "5" in fancy scalloped circle rate marking in blue, at Dresden it was forwarded to Paris, Tennessee in Henry Co. receiving a black c.d.s. of Dresden, plus beautifully struck negative "5" in circle for the additional forwarding postage, then a negative "X" in box to indicate the total of 10c to be collected, both of these negative markings are very attractive and desirable and it is rare to find both of them on the same cover, minor edge flaws at bottom of cover, a very fine letter with considerable eye appeal. 509 c 1, 2 image#1, 2, 5c Red brown and 10c Black, a most unusual matched pair of 1847 Issue covers, each imprinted on front and back with a framed Arabic imprint, both posted from Nashville, Tennessee to Baltimore paying the 10c rate for over 300 miles, the first posted on February 21st, probably 1850, with a 10c Black single with large margins to just touching and possessing a pre-printing paper fold that if opened out would show over 1mm unprinted gap in the top right corner, tied by blue grid cancel with blue "Paid" and "5" in scalloped circle handstamps at left, the second posted two days later on February 23rd with 5c Red brown right sheet-margin pair, large margins to just in at top left, possessing rich color and tied by blue grids, the covers show edge wear and mild creasing not affecting the stamps.This correspondence of two covers is, by far, among the most fascinating usages found with the 1847 Issue. The Arabic inscription when translated reads "Louise Ullman". Little is known for certain about her except that it has been speculated that she was a theologist who travelled through the Middle East. She evidently was of German descent as the addresses frequently revert to an old German script. Both covers are addressed to a Miss Johanne Dorothy Rosenhauer. The use of Arabic writing on mail within the United States, especially at this early period, is highly unusual. It is believed that this pair of covers represents the only known use of the 1847 issue on foreign language corner card covers. A very fine and remarkable pair of covers essential to the 1847 Issue specialist and/or exhibitor. (imagea) (Image) Est. 15,000-20,000

York. Am. Pkt./Jan 19/35" accounting c.d.s. on the front, when the stamps were found on the reverse the "35" was obliterated by a black grid and "Paid other side" written at top, a portion of the proper red New York pmk. was placed on the reverse tying the block, proper British and French transits, backstamped Horb, very fine cover with an impressive franking and a most unusual usage. BUFFALO BALLOON POST

520 P CL1P image#CL1P, 5c Buffalo Balloon, proof in black on India paper, Schoendorf Ty. I, strikingly handsome proof pulled from the single impression typographed plate/die early on in its original state before the small flaws developed that Schoendorf uses to distinguish the different types, intense black color on bright white paper, the India type proof paper has taken the impression exceptionally well showing all the lines clearly, being much more detailed than the issued stamps, extremely fine; includes a photostat of an 1894 letter written by John H.B. Lillard, who produced the stamps in 1877, in there he notes that 300 stamps were issued and 23 used, he makes no mention of proofs but there were undoubtedly considerably less issued, despite the fact that the proof is priced the same as the issued stamp in the Scott catalog; air mail specialist Robert Schoendorf in his booklet The Buffalo Balloon Mail 1873-1877" comments that he knew of one example of the proof that was sold in 1975 (probably this example) and that he had seen another example in the 1930's, the whereabouts of which is unknown, furthermore, in his appendix he values the black proof at about three times the value of an unused Type I stamp; it is quite likely that the example offered here is the finer of only two or at the most three examples that are recorded; signed A.
