384 nhPB 299 image#299, 10c Pan-American, a magnificent full top left corner margin partial arrow, imprint and plate no. 1151 block of ten, being in a brilliantly "post office" fresh condition, gloriously rich colors, amazingly well centered with each stamp in the block being incredibly well centered, which is almost unheard of for a multiple of this size and for this notoriously tightly margined issue, unblemished o.g., n.h., trivial selvage tear over the non-plate right pair, truly of no significance as the integral plate block is an extremely fine gem, certainly being one of the finest top position plate blocks of the Ten Cent 1901 Pan-American issue in existence. 386 E 300-E3, 307-E1 image#300-E3, 307-E1, 1c and 10c Preliminary black and blue green ink drawings by designer Raymond Ostrander Smith, on piece of kraft paper measuring approximately 192x253mm, on one side in both black and blue green watercolors is a sketch intended originally for the 5c value but adopted for the 1c, on the reverse is a similar sketch in blue green watercolor ink of a frame for the 10c value, but unadopted, though similar in style to the figure used on the 1c, small edge flaws to paper, which is very typical of these working essays, none affecting either drawing, very fine; a wonderful showpiece for the designs of this issue, created by the designer of the 1902 Issue who's designs are acknowledged to be some of the most attractive and artistic of all United States stamps; Scott lists both of these unique essay drawings but fails to mention that they are found on the front and back of the same sheet. 387 E 300E image#300E, 1c Franklin photographic essay of unaccepted design, the actual contemporaneous photograph in stamp size and in sepia tone on photo paper measuring 63x51mm, the model from which this photo was made consisted of an engraved vignette of Franklin from a portrait by J.B. Longacre facing left, rather than right as in the issued stamp, the frame of the model is hand drawn in ink and pencil, the purpose of this original photograph was to allow the designer to the see design in stamp size and adopt what was desired before the arduous work of engraving was done, very fine; also includes a contemporary 8x enlarged photo of the original photograph. 390 ogPB 300 var. image#300 var., 1c Blue green, dry print, striking top imprint, partial arrow and plate no. 2408 block of twelve, four stamps and a portion of the fifth of the plate block of six, plus the imprint, show a dramatic dry print caused by the paper being incompletely wetted and failing to properly transfer the ink, resulting in the design being very faint and incomplete in that area, the rest of the stamps being in their full deep green color and detailed impression, o.g., h.r. reinforcing some separated perfs., tiny edge nick in one left stamp and a light crease in one non-plate block stamp, a very fine example of this scarce printing variety for the specialist. 400 c 300b image#300b, 1c Blue green booklet pane with vertical guide line at right, position, position B or K (lacking the top tab as is the case with all of the known panes on cover), this pane is unusually well centered with strong rich color, most remarkably this is used on a 2c Carmine on blue postal entire (#U414) with no other franking, paying the short-lived 8c double U.P.U rate to England, this rate, instituted on October 1, 1907, provided for 5c on the first ounce and 3c for each additional ounce, on October 1, 1908 it changed again by treaty with England to 2c per ounce, the pane is tied by two strikes of "Lewes/Del/Aug. 19, 1908" duplexes, backstamped Brighton in Sussex, England, minor edge flaws to the cover including wrinkles at right because of the large enclosure and mended tears to back flap, none of which affects the booklet pane, nevertheless a very fine cover of the greatest rarity and a marvelous usage; it is believed by specialists that only four covers with this booklet pane are known, three of which are domestic usages, the only other cover that we have ever offered with a 1c booklet pane franking was in our December 2002 auction of the Roger S. Brody Collection of the 1902 Series which realized $3,575.00 including the buyer's premium. (Image) Est. 3,000-4,000
