27 O 9 var. image#9 var., 1c Blue, Ty. IV, Chicago Perforation 12 1/2, position 49L1L, a highly desirable used example of this enormously rare experimental perforation, fresh rich color and impression, centered to the top left as is typical of this perforation, the vast majority being very poorly centered, and remarkably surrounded by fully intact perforations, small corner crease at top right confined entirely to the margin and tiny natural inclusion in Franklin's hair, remarkably fine for this. The origin of the unusual perforation gauging 12 1/2, known as the "Chicago Perfs", has been well documented by philatelic scholars Jerome S. Wagshal and Wilson Hulme III (Chronicle #130, 174-75). At about the time the Post Office department was investigating methods for more efficient stamp separation, a Chicago dentist, Elijah J. Hadley, invented a perforation machine which he used to perforate 1c and 3c imperforate stamps of the 1851-57 Series. This machine was promoted by Chicago banker R.K. Swift who also used the perforated stamps on his mail. But Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear and Co. decided to purchase a rouletting machine from England, which was later converted to a perforator and produced the first perforated issues of the United States in 1857. The few 1c and 3c stamps used in 1856-1857 are the remaining testament to Dr. Hadley's ingenuity. Very few of these experimental perforations have survived, the 3c being much more "common" than the 1c. Mr. Hulme in his updated census records a total of only 20 examples of the One Cent of which two are unused and five are on cover. However, of this total only six examples are the type IV (Scott #9), three of which are in the only recorded multiple of a strip of three. No type IV is known on cover. The example offered here is arguably the finest of the three remaining singles available to collectors. Accompanied by 1973 and 2005 PF certificates. ex-"Lake Shore" Collection and "Ganymede".
