CHINA COLLECTIONS
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
1908 ogbl China substantial balance of the "Shanghai" Collection, consisting of many hundreds of mint stamps housed in a small handmade album, collected by the original Ma Catalogue of China and including the collector's catalog numbers and notes on varieties, the collection starts with a very modest amount of the Empire, the major portion of the collection being issues of the Republic to 1949 (Scott #86/1006, B1/M13), the first vertical 1912 "Republic of China" Statistical Department overprints are complete with extra shades and varieties including an inverted surcharge on the $2.00 value, both of the 1912 commemorative sets are complete as well, starting in about 1925 the collection is very comprehensive and often specialized for the regular and commemorative issues, each series is collected for the basic stamps as well as frequently a number of varieties, for example the 1931-37 Sun Yat-sen issues are collected in both the wide and narrow formats, a few used stamps and sets are included but these are almost always in addition to mint issues except for a few varieties, the surcharged issues from 1940-43 that were printed in different types by the various districts are exceptionally extensive and interesting, the 50c Surcharges on both the Domestic Paid stamps with obliterating lines as well as on regular issues are especially nice, semi-postals and air posts are virtually complete for the period, as are the postage dues except for the neutrality overprints, plus parcel posts and military stamps, one of the most important parts of this collection are the great number of varieties that are found throughout, usually more so with the regular and overprinted issues, some of the things that we note are perforation varieties and errors including pairs imperforate between, scarce perforation gauges on various issues, particularly in the 50c Surcharges, overprint varieties both listed and unlisted and even some issues collected by paper types, the total of these varieties adds up to hundreds of items, condition is quite above average for collections of this scope, while a few flaws are present they are few and of little significance, o.g. or without gum as issued is the norm, truly a fine-very fine and very specialized collection that needs to be examined to be appreciated; Scott value for just the listed material is well in excess of $13,500.00, not counting the numerous varieties listed in Chan or Ma, or perhaps not listed at all.
