1616 og 64 image#64, 1897 30c Large numeral surcharge with narrow spacing on 24ca Dowager first printing, a magnificent mint example of one of the great rarities of both the Dowager issues as well as all of China, possessing exceptional physical features that make this an especially pretty stamp including being marvelously well centered within large margins, complemented by full even perforations, the color is bright and distinctive of the first printing Dowager issue, plus it has full original gum being lightly hinged with just a bare hint of aging, extremely fine.The first printing Dowager commemoratives were the only ones to be regularly issued as unoverprinted stamps. When a currency change was made it was decided to overprint this issue with new values. Small numeral surcharges were issued exclusively on this issue. When these ran out it was decided to print new stamps exclusively for overprinting and at the same time recall all unoverprinted Dowager issues from the post offices for overprinting. As the printers went through the two different spacings of large numeral overprints, they overprinted the original first printings that were being recalled as they came in along with the new printings that were specially printed for overprinting. This whole process produced some very scarce stamps depending on how many stamps were returned for overprinting. This along with the many varieties of both stamps and overprints has made a fascinating collecting area for the students of China.The stamp offered here is the epitome of the rarities produced by the above process. It is believed that only one sheet of the 24ca First Printing Dowager was given this late large numeral surcharge with 1 1/2mm spacing. In referring to the 30c on 24ca narrow large numeral surcharge Dr. Ma said that this stamp and the one on the new printing "...are two of the rarest and most valuable 'classic' Chinese stamps - scarcer than the 'small dollar'." We are pleased to offer this amazing rarity that is worthy of the finest collections of Chinese stamps (Chan #70; $45,000.00). (Image) $27,500.00
