50 nhPB 400A image#400A, 10c Panama-Pacific, orange, a stunning quality full top margin plate no. 6139 block of six, this being not only one of the rarest plate blocks of the 20th century, but also one of the most challenging to find in premium condition, especially as a full top position such as this, incredibly fresh overall and possessing the most intense rich orange color imaginable, extraordinarily well centered and margined throughout, strong and intact perforations, immaculate o.g., never hinged, extremely fine overall; this remarkable never hinged full top example of this rarity is, unquestionably, one of the very finest available, potentially rivaled by only one other example which realized $38,500.00 (including premium) in a November 13, 2004 auction conducted by Matthew Bennett International (sale #283). 52 nhPB 404 image#404, 10c Panama-Pacific, perf. 10, a spectacular full top margin plate no. 6143 block of six, extraordinarily fresh, gorgeous vibrant color in an especially deep shade, crisp detailed impression on bright paper, exceptionally well centered throughout, strong and intact perforations, pristine o.g., never hinged, top center stamp with small natural pre-printing paper fold mentioned for accuracy only, extremely fine.Plate blocks of the perforated 10 Ten Cent Panama-Pacific issue rank among the great rarities of 20th century U.S. philately. According to Lewis Kaufman, the well known dealer and student of U.S. plate blocks, there are likely only thirty existing plate blocks of this stamp. However, the population of existing full top examples - the most desired position - is only a tiny fraction of the total. In fact, he records only five full top plate blocks, including the example offered here. Included in his count of the five examples is a plate contained within a complete sheet of seventy (plate no. 6135), leaving only four full top examples available to plate block collectors. To our knowledge, the last comparable full top plate block to have appeared at auction was a similarly choice never hinged example (same plate no. 6143) in a June 1992 Christies New York auction. Its appearance at that auction resulted in considerable bidding activity, finally realizing a record $33,000.00 (including premium) versus a then catalog value of only $10,000.00. We fully expect that the appearance of this wonderful example from Mr. Gray's collection will elicit similar bidding excitement.A rare opportunity to acquire one of the rarest, and one of the finest existing, United States plate blocks. Accompanied by a 1998 PF certificate. (Image) $20,000.00

SOLD for $40,000.00
