2040 nhbl C23b image#C23b, 6c Dark blue and carmine, horizontal pair, imperforate vertically, a spectacular complete sheet of fifty partially perforated diagonally instead of perforated vertically, creating three pairs at lower left that are completely imperforate vertically, showing red plate no. F21848 and blue plate no. F21948, as well as two "TOP's" and registration markers at top, well centered, paper with just the slightest overall aging of little importance, all stamps (including the three error pairs) n.h., hinged in the top selvage only, two inconsequential selvage tears, overall very fine; a major United States error of the first magnitude, making its first appearance on the auction market in over six decades; for years it has been thought that only one sheet containing five error pairs was known, that famous sheet having diagonal perforations going in the opposite direction, creating error pairs in the top left corner (including in the plate block), that sheet was broken up many years ago into the unique plate number block containing two error strips of three, plus two strips containing a single error pair in each, and whenever these errors appeared in auction they always were referred to having come from the unique sheet, as it was little known that the sheet offered here made an appearance in a 1942 Harmer, Rooke & Co. auction where the current owner's father acquired it, he then donated the sheet to the Children's Specialized Hospital in Mountainside, NJ where it resided anonymously for years until it was bought back by the original donor in 1965, it has remained with the owner's family until now; cataloged simply as three error pairs. (Image) as three pairs 37,500.00+
