I, position 7R1E, extravagantly large margins virtually all around, showing a portion of the adjoining stamp at bottom, just touched at left, gloriously rich color in the distinctive bright Plate 1 Early shade, excellent clarity of impression on fresh paper, wonderfully postmarked with a light and unobtrusive strike of a blue "Richmond, Va./Nov 24" c.d.s., which in no way obscures the important Ty. I design characteristics at bottom or the double transfer at top right, an extremely fine gem in every regard. A magnificent quality example of one of the rarest and most sought-after classic United States stamps. Only one position (out of a possible 1,000), the legendary position 7R1E, provides the philatelic world with the only full Type I design as originally intended, a characteristic no other One Cent imperforate displays. According to the census compiled and published by Jerome S. Wagshal in 2001, there are only 90 confirmed examples of the imperforate Type I, virtually all of which are used. When one eliminates those found on cover or in multiples, there are a mere 56 examples available to collectors. Of this small population very few are found both with the remarkable physical characteristics this possesses, as well as being completely sound. The narrow spacing between the stamps, and the lack of care taken when separating the stamps for use, has resulted in the paucity of available four-margined copies to collectors. The example offered here from the Hinrichs collection comes from the "Warner strip" of positions 7-9R1E. The strip was intact when it was sold in the 1956 Caspary sale. However, after the Caspary sale, the position 7R1E was carefully separated from the strip with the intent on preserving the remarkable margins this stamp boasts. As a result, this particular example now ranks among the top two or three finest sound examples in existence. One of the great condition rarities of 19th century United States philately. 44 O image#5A, 1c Blue, Ty. Ib, position 8R1E, the fabulous used example offered here is the epitome of perfection and is, unquestionably among the very finest used Ty. Ib's in existence, as each and every aspect of this magnificent stamp could not be improved upon, being a remarkable combination of condition and rarity on a single stamp, from its gorgeous bright Plate 1 Early color (the so-called "Robin's Egg" shade) and prooflike impression, to its lavishly large margins, including a portion of the sheet margin at top, a lovely red town c.d.s complements its overall eye appeal, a superb gem; any Ty. Ib stamp is rare, but positions 6R1E and 8R1E are the two positions which best display the Ty. Ia, position 97R4, a fabulous quality used example of this important classic rarity, possessing huge and perfectly balanced margins all around, sumptuously rich color and an incredibly detailed impression on bright fresh paper, light and unobtrusive black town c.d.s., extremely fine gem; the excellent clarity of the impression of this lovely stamp and the fortuitous placement of the cancel allows for all of the distinctive Ty. Ia characteristics to show exceedingly well; the rarity of any imperforate Ty. III vertical combination strip of three, positions 80/90/100L4, a spectacular bottom right corner sheet-margin vertical strip of three, with the bottom stamp being the very rare Ty. Ia, while the center stamp is Ty. IIIa and the top stamp is Ty. III, in a most remarkable state of preservation and overall condition, boasting lavishly large to huge margins all around, plus its color is extraordinarily deep and its impression truly prooflike on incredibly fresh paper, completely free of any flaws one might expect to find on such a strip, neat manuscript cancels, extremely fine in every regard; illustrated on page 115 of Lester G.
