1880-1885 Special Printings of the 1879-1883 Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
351 og image#192, 1c Dark ultramarine special printing, without gum as issued, an incomparable example of this tremendously rare stamp, being in a quality unrivalled by any other among the approximately 30 copies still in existence, as this particular value is notorious for being found poorly centered and more often than not with faults, however the exciting copy offered here is the only recorded well centered and completely sound example, possessing an outstanding overall freshness, with sumptuously rich color, perfectly centered within wide margins, full intact perforations, an extremely fine gem in every respect; the rarity of this stamp cannot be overstated, particularly in this spectacular quality and we believe this to be among the most important condition rarities in all of U.S. philately; 1997 PF certificate. (Image) 27,500.00

SOLD for $85,000.00
Closing..May-21, 04:00 PM
352 og image#193, 2c Black brown special printing, without gum as issued, an outstanding example of this truly rare special printing, featuring exceptional centering that is far superior to the vast majority of known examples, plus its margins are uncharacteristically wide, strikingly intense color and impression, extremely fine; among the finest existing examples of the approximately 50 to 60 copies still believed to exist; 1971 PF certificate. (Image) 16,000.00

SOLD for $20,000.00
Closing..May-21, 04:00 PM
353 og image#194, 3c Blue green special printing, without gum as issued, marvelously fresh, with sumptuously rich characteristic color and a highly detailed impression on bright clean paper, centered just slightly to right as are most of the known examples, however this is much better centered than nearly all others, completely free of any flaws which affect most surviving copies, choice very fine. A magnificent example of one of the rarest and most difficult of all Bank Note Special Printings, with perhaps fewer than 20 still believed to exist (only 12 of which have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation). This particular example is considered to be the finest known #194 in terms of its overall quality. There are a couple examples which have slightly better centering, but each of these have thins. It is interesting to note that virtually every time one encounters a great collection of United States stamps, the one stamp that is missing out of all the Special Printings is the Three Cent Soft Paper Bank Note. When an example of this stamp makes an infrequent appearance at auction, it always attracts not only considerable bidder attention, but impressive price levels as well. In fact, when this particular copy last sold at auction in our May 2002 sale of the Joseph E. Lessin collection, a record realization was achieved after heated and highly competitive bidding. Dr. Hinrichs was the ultimate winner of the stamp at $67,500.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium. It, understandably, has become one of his most prized stamps in his remarkable collection. We fully anticipate that its appearance now will again result in an a similarly eye-opening realization - and deservedly so. Accompanied by 1948, 1967 and 1992 PF certificates; ex-Lilly, Kantor and Lessin. (Image) 50,000.00

SOLD for $80,000.00
Closing..May-21, 04:00 PM
354 og image#195, 6c Dull rose special printing, without gum as issued, a handsome and choice example of this very rare and terribly challenging value to find in premium condition, being attractively centered within exceptionally wide margins, warm characteristic color, very fine; one of the few existing sound and well centered examples, with no more than 30 copies believed to still exist and, to our knowledge, there exists no perfectly centered examples, in fact few exist with superior centering and margins to the example offered here; 1996 PF certificate. (Image) 35,000.00

SOLD for $22,000.00
Closing..May-21, 04:00 PM
355 og image#196, 7c Scarlet vermilion special printing, without gum as issued, a breathtakingly beautiful example of this scarce stamp, possessing margins of extraordinary size and being very nearly perfectly centered within them, gloriously rich and vibrant color, full intact perforations, an extremely fine gem; we doubt that there are many other examples, of the fewer than 100 copies that exist, which rival the quality of this extraordinary stamp; 1998 PF certificate; ex-Zoellner. (Image) 5,500.00

SOLD for $19,000.00
Closing..May-21, 04:00 PM

Floyd collection in October 2001, where Mr. Floyd's example realized a record $17,000.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium, and we believe the Hinrichs copy offered here to be equally as nice, if not even slightly better; 1989 PF certificate; ex-Cole. (Image) 8,000.00

SOLD for $20,000.00
Closing..May-21, 04:00 PM
