1880-1885 Special Printings of the 1879-1883 Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
163 og 192 image#192, 1c Dark ultramarine special printing, without gum as issued, sumptuously rich color on fresh paper, three very wide margins, centered a bit to bottom as a number of these are found, completely free of the faults which plague the majority of known examples, very fine; a choice and sound example of this enormously rare stamp of which approximately 30 to 40 are known; it is estimated that less than half of the existing One Cent Soft Paper Special Printings are sound, and of this elite group very few are known with very fine or better centering; 1966 and 2002 PF certificates; ex-"Country Gentleman", Lessin. (Image) 27,500.00

SOLD for $20,500.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
164 og 193 image#193, 2c Black brown special printing, without gum as issued, a very rare sound example of this important special printing, while centered a bit to top as many of the existing copies are found, it is rather well centered within large margins, intensely rich color and impression, very fine; only 50 to 60 examples of this value are thought to still exist; 2000 PF certificate. (Image) 16,000.00

SOLD for $7,500.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
165 og 196 image#196, 7c Scarlet vermilion special printing, without gum as issued, an extraordinary quality example of this very scarce stamp, possessing huge margins unlike any other we have encountered, and being wonderfully well centered within them, gloriously rich and vibrant color on bright paper, extremely fine; of the less than 100 examples of this value thought to exist, this stamp has few rivals in terms of its overall condition; 2001 PF certificate. (Image) 5,500.00

SOLD for $5,750.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
166 og 197 image#197, 10c Deep brown special printing, without gum as issued, a magnificent example of this important Special Printing rarity, fabulously well centered within very large margins, sumptuously rich color and an incredibly detailed impression on immaculate paper, completely free of the faults that plague most known copies, an extremely fine gem in every regard; unquestionably one of the very finest of the fewer than 30 known examples; the catalog value of this stamp bears little relationship to the true market value of a copy in such outstanding quality, for example the last three premium quality copies which appeared at auction have each realized between $35,000.00 and $42,500.00, not including the 10% buyer's premium; 1988 PF certificate; ex- T. Charlton Henry, Klein, Golin and McKinney. (Image) 28,500.00

SOLD for $40,000.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
167 og 198 image#198, 12c Blackish purple special printing, without gum as issued, a remarkable example in a quality that is almost impossible to find, being perfectly centered amid very large margins, prooflike color and impression on bright fresh paper, fully intact and uniformly even perforations, an extremely fine gem; a superb copy that is, unquestionably, among the finest in existence and certainly the finest to appear on the auction market since a similarly select example from the William S. Floyd collection (sold by this firm in October 2001) realized $17,000.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium; 1986 PF certificate. (Image) 8,000.00

SOLD for $15,000.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
168 og 199 image#199, 15c Orange special printing, without gum as issued, sumptuously deep and vibrant color, nicely centered within very large margins, small thin spot which is endemic to these soft porous paper issues, plus some negligible light soiling, otherwise very fine for this immensely rare special printing; approximately 30 copies of the Fifteen Cent Soft Paper Special Printing are thought to exist; 1999 PF certificate. (Image) 27,500.00

SOLD for $17,000.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
169 og 200 image#200, 24c Dark violet special printing, without gum as issued, deep characteristic color, reasonably well centered, tiny thin spot, otherwise fine for this rare stamp; it is believed that less than 75 examples yet exist; 1995 PF certificate. (Image) 7,750.00

SOLD for $2,600.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
170 og 201 image#201, 30c Greenish black special printing, without gum as issued, a seldom seen sound example of this very rare special printing, rich unmistakable greenish black color and a strong impression on bright paper, rather well centered, completely free of any flaws which plague so many existing examples, very fine for this; approximately 40 examples are thought to exist of the Thirty Cent Soft Paper Special Printing; signed W.H.C. (Warren H. Colson) and accompanied by 1943 APS and 1973 PF certificates; ex-Sheriff. (Image) 18,000.00

SOLD for $14,500.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
171 og 202 image#202, 90c Dull carmine special printing, without gum as issued, a spectacular quality select example of this important United States rarity, which clearly places it among the very finest in existence, possessing outstanding centering for this within incredibly wide margins unlike any other example we have seen, rich characteristic special printing color on bright paper, fully intact perforations, extremely fine; less than 40 copies exist of this value, which is one of the most difficult of all special printings to find in this gem quality; one of the highlights of the McCarthy collection; 2000 PSE and 2001 PF certificates. (Image) 25,000.00

SOLD for $27,000.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
172 og 203 image#203, 2c Scarlet vermilion special printing, without gum as issued, extraordinarily vivid and intense color that is characteristic only to genuine Special Printings, attractively centered, completely free of the faults that affect several existing examples, very fine. A marvelously fresh and bright example of this immensely rare stamp, of which only 20 are recorded (18 have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation, plus two others - one of these is not available to collectors as it is in the Miller Collection housed in the New York Public Library). An exciting opportunity to acquire one of the great United States rarities. Accompanied by 1948 and 2002 PF certificates; ex-Lessin. (Image) 55,000.00

SOLD for $24,000.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
173 og 205C image#205C, 5c Gray brown special printing, without gum as issued, wonderfully well centered within large margins, rich luxuriant color in the distinctive gray brown shade attributed only to the Special Printings, prooflike impression on fresh paper, choice very fine. A marvelous example of this incredibly rare stamp. A total of only 22 different copies have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation as genuine Five Cent Garfield Special Printings. Because of the extreme rarity of this stamp, very few collectors will ever have a chance to own a copy of this elusive Special Printing, and fewer still can acquire one in such outstanding quality. Signed W.H.C. (Warren H. Colson) and accompanied by 1961 and 2001 PF certificates; ex-T. Charlton Henry, Kharasch and Lessin. (Image) 40,000.00

SOLD for $31,000.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
174 nh 211B image#211B, 2c Pale red brown special printing, a magnificent quality mint example, possessing virtually perfect centering amid the most immense margins we have ever encountered on this special printing, contributing further to this stamp's spectacular overall appeal is its wonderful freshness, with truly prooflike color and impression on immaculate paper, pristine o.g., n.h., extremely fine gem; while nice quality #211B's can be found, few can compare to the superb condition of the copy offered here; 1992 PF certificate (bottom sheet selvage subsequently removed). (Image) 725.00

SOLD for $1,900.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
175 og 211B image#211B, 2c Pale red brown special printing, strong color, full o.g., very lightly hinged, fresh and fine; photocopy of a 1990 PF certificate for a block of six, this being the top right stamp. (Image) 450.00

SOLD for $350.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
176 og 211D image#211D, 4c Deep blue green special printing, without gum as issued, especially intense color and a deeply etched impression, very fine. There are only 26 recorded examples of this immensely rare stamp, 25 of which have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation. The number known exactly coincides with Post Office records which indicate 26 copies of the Four Cent Special Printing were sold. Therefore, it is highly unlikely any further copies will ever be found that will be certified by the PF. A handsome example of one of the rarest of all the Special Printings. Once part of one of the two known blocks, both of which were broken up decades ago. Accompanied by a 1954 PF certificate for a block of four, this being the top right stamp, plus 1976 and 2002 PF certificates as a single; ex-"Ambassador" collection, Lutwak, Greenblatt and Lessin. (Image) 37,500.00

SOLD for $20,000.00
Closing..Dec-12, 03:00 PM
