141 c S.G. #CC2 imageS.G. #CC2, "Paid at Grenada" red Crowned circle handstamp, an amazingly distinct and clear strike of this postmark that normally comes quite poorly struck, on the front of attractive 1855 cover to Saint Thomas, red manuscript "4" marking for the rate within the West Indies that was prepaid, clear strike of "Grenada/AU 27 1855" large double-arc c.d.s. with serifed letters on the reverse, lovely cover with an extremely fine example of this scarce marking; Crowned Paid markings are not common because prior to 1858 letters within the British Empire could be sent due to be paid by the recipient, which was the preferred method, this marking was used only in the rare cases where the sender wanted to pay the postage or where the destination was a foreign country and required prepayment, St. Thomas, though in the West Indies, was not British and required prepayment, making for a wonderful example of this usage. 142 c S.G. #CC2 imageS.G. #CC2, "Paid at Grenada" red Crowned circle handstamp, very presentable strike of this difficult paid marking on 1853 folded cover to London, to the Secretary of the East India Company, red London receiving c.d.s. at right, on the reverse is a nice strike of large double-arc "Grenada/NO 10 1853" c.d.s. with inverted index letter "B" (a scarce variety in its own right), very fine and rare; this cover shows a particularly unusual and scarce usage in that nearly all covers sent from Grenada to Britain were sent postage due to be paid by the recipient, prepaid covers within the British Empire are decidedly rare; ex-Messenger, Hackmey and Towers. 143 c S.G. #CC2 imageS.G. #CC2, "Paid at Grenada" red Crowned circle handstamp, reasonably well struck example, though slightly overstruck by London transit, on petite cover to Edinburgh, Scotland, on the reverse is a lovely strike of small "Grenada/NO 10 60" c.d.s. with index letter "C", backstamped, very fine; this is an example of the late period usage of the Paid Crowned circle frank, Great Britain had ordered that on May 1, 1860 the postal system was to be operated by Grenada rather than the British Crown, this marking was used to mark covers pre-paid (which was now required) until stamps for Grenada could be obtained. 145 O S.G. #Z1 imageS.G. #Z1, 1857 1p Rose red, perf. 14, horizontal pair, centered into the perforations at bottom, tied to piece of St. George's Chronicle, by two strikes of "A15" in bars oval, piece is large enough to show date of 16th Dec., 1858 and the address to London, fresh and attractive, aside from the centering of the stamps a very fine piece; newspapers have rarely been saved intact because they are hard to preserve and even harder to mount, collectors have been content with manageable size pieces to represent the usage, this piece has all the desirable elements and is one of only three recorded printed matter usages using 1p stamps of Great Britain; 1939 Robson Lowe certificate; ex-Messenger and Hackmey (Scott #A3). 146 c S.G. #Z1, 3 imageS.G. #Z1, 3, 1857 1p Rose red, two singles and 4p Rose, on 1859 folded cover to Glasgow, Scotland, each stamp with central clear strike of "A15" in bars oval cancel, the 4p is tied by the cancel and the 1p values are "tied" by the impression of the cancel or perf. toning, large "Grenada/MR 23 1859" double-arc c.d.s. on the reverse along with London transit and Glasgow backstamp, some toning to cover and small faults to stamps, still fine and a very scarce franking; this cover pays the normal 6p packet rate to Britain, it is believed that two shipments of the 6p stamp were needed to supply the island with stamps for this most usual 6p rate, and this combination was necessitated in early 1859 due to a shortage of 6p stamps awaiting the second shipment (Scott #A3, 5). 148 c S.G. #Z3 imageS.G. #Z3, 1857 4p Rose, single franking on 1858 folded cover to London, side flaps missing, well centered stamp tied by strong and slightly over-inked "A15" in bars oval, "Grenada/0 SP 9 185" large double-arc c.d.s. showing mis-insertion of the date plugs (probably should be "10 SP 1858"), backstamped London, manuscript "More to pay 2 pence" on the front, very fine and an extremely rare usage; the proper single rate was 6p to London and at this time pre-payment was compulsory, this letter was accepted with a partial payment, the rest to be collected from the recipient, only two covers are known with 4p single frankings, this being a unique partially paid cover; 1957 RPS certificate; ex-Messenger and Hackmey (Scott #A5). 150 c S.G. #Z4 imageS.G. #Z4, 1856 6p Lilac, horizontal pair, centered to the bottom and with unevenly separated wing margin at left, yet fresh with bright rich color and attractive, tied by cleanly struck "A15" in bars oval cancel to 1859 folded cover to London, endorsed "per Steamer 9th August 1859", and with small Grenada c.d.s. of that date with inverted index letter "C" on the reverse, red London receiving cancel on the front, a very fine and pretty cover; this value was the most used of the Great Britain stamps paying the 6p rate to England and often the double rate as in this case (Scott #A6). 152 c S.G. #Z5 imageS.G. #Z5, 1856 1/- Green, a phenomenally well centered single, perfectly tied to 1859 folded cover to Glasgow, Scotland by full and detailed "A15" oval of bars cancel, on reverse is a large double-arc "Grenada/26 FE 1859" c.d.s., red London transit and backstamped, an extremely attractive example of this rare usage, normal file folds, otherwise extremely fine; the 1/- value is the scarcest of the four Great Britain values (despite Stanley Gibbons listing of the 2p; the collector doubts that it exists and has not seen a genuine example in over 30 years), it was intended to pay the normal double rate to Britain, yet two 6p values is a much more common method of paying this rate, only three covers are known with the 1/- Green, this being the finest (Scott #A7). 156 PTbl S.G. #1P, 3P imageS.G. #1P, 3P, 1861 1p and 6p Plate proofs in a range of shades from rose to lake red, includes imperforate pair, block of four and two blocks of six of the 1p on wove paper, these being color proofs for the 1p, then two 6p imperforate blocks of four on wove paper and three 6p imperforate pairs and a single on horizontally laid paper, it is believed that the darker lake red shades of these 6p values were used for the perforation 11-12 1/2 experiment of S.G. #3a which was unissued, all are without gum as produced, margins are full and clear all around, one pair and one block of four with minor thins, otherwise very fine-extremely fine; a nice lot with a total of 33 proof impressions (Scott #1-2P). 159 c S.G. #1 imageS.G. #1, 1861 1p Bluish green, rough perf. 14-16, attractive single tied to an amazingly early single franking cover to Trinidad, the stamp, which is unobtrusively affected by a vertical file fold, is neatly tied by a light strike of the "A15" in bars oval cancel, on the reverse is a clearly readable "Grenada/JU 05 61" c.d.s. with inverted index letter "C", manuscript "4" rate to be collected, the 1p paying the Grenada post office charge, this cover has been water damaged and stained at right which has been expertly restored, very fine appearance; the issuance date for this issue has been established as June 3, 1861 by post office correspondence indicating that this date is the earliest that stamps could have been used, but not establishing that they were in fact issued then, that makes this cover, which was sent only three days later, incredibly early and in theory could have been on the first day that the new stamps were used, regardless this is the earliest recorded letter with Grenada stamps and a cover of great importance to the postal historian; double signed Pfenninger and accompanied by 1988 Holcombe certificate (Scott #1a). 160 c S.G. #1 imageS.G. #1, 1861 1p Bluish green, rough perf. 14-16, single of this scarce first issue, centered to the top right, tied to folded letter to Trinidad by clear "A15" in bars oval cancel, on the reverse is found the rare "G"/Apr.5 1862" double circle c.d.s. of Grenada's General Post Office, double-arc Trinidad backstamp, rated "4" with the stamp paying only the Grenada portion of the posting, file fold just catches the right side of the stamp, though not detracting from its appearance, file folds on cover have had minor professional cleaning to give the cover a fresh and attractive appearance, a fine and rare cover; the "G" coded cancel was originally assigned to the General Post Office, later the "G" was assigned to the parish post office at St. Davids #2, in either case this cancel is rarely seen and in this early period only four examples of this cancel are recorded (Scott #1a).
