124 c image1763 Inbound folded letter to Grenada, from Johnston & Jolly of London on September 19, 1763, to Newton & Gordon arriving in Grenada on October 7, 1763, carried by ship without postal marking as normal in this time period, slight aging to paper but still fresh and very fine; Britain captured Grenada from the French on March 3, 1762 during the Seven Years War and the island was ceded to Great Britain on February 10, 1863, this is the earliest recorded British cover to Grenada. 125 c image1764 Folded letter to London, datelined "Grenada April 26th 1764", carried by private ship "pr. favour of/Patrick Maxwell Esqr./Q.D.C." (Whom God Preserve), manuscript "Ship Letter" without port designation as this is a very early example of this type of service, appears to be rated 4p which equals 1p gratuity to the ship's captain and 3p internal postage, this puts the port within 80 miles of London, small Bishop's mark receiving handstamp on the reverse, very fine for this eighteenth century letter; this is the earliest recorded letter from Grenada. 126 c image1784 "Grenada" first straight line handstamp, type with upper and lower case letters, on reverse of folded letter to Air, North Britain, datelined "Grenada 8th Febry. 1784" carried by private ship with "Deal/Ship Lre" handstamp on the front, large Bishop mark overstrikes the Grenada marking, fine example of this scarce marking; this first handstamp was used for about a year after Grenada was ceded back to Britain by France after the American Revolution (letter makes note that the British flag now flies in Grenada after four and a half years under the French); this is the earliest documented example of this first handstamp marking. 127 c image1785 "GRENADA" straight line handstamp, the rare second handstamp in all capital letters, a clear strike on the reverse of attractive folded letter to Glasgow, datelined "Grenada 19th March 1785", carried as a ship letter with "Deal/Ship Lre" handstamp on the front, both black and red Bishop receiving marks, very fine letter; the letter itself is a normal business letter with bill of lading for sugar included, but letter makes reference to Negroes (slaves) being inoculated and recovered from the smallpox; this straight line marking is of the greatest rarity and was used for only a few months, it is the only know example making this a highly desirable and key letter for the collector of this country; ex-Towers. 128 c image1785 "Grenada" and Crown circular handstamp a nice clear strike of this unusual marking that was used for the last fourteen years of the eighteenth century, on folded letter to Air in North Britain, datelined "Grenada 4th June 1785", carried by private ship with "Exeter/Ship Lre" on the front, large Bishop mark on reverse, rated and marked out a couple of times ending up at "1/4", very fine for this early period; this popular marking was used for a longer period in comparison to the earlier straight line handstamps, but it is not common, and this example is the earliest recorded usage. 129 c image1799 "Grenada" and Crown circular handstamp, on reverse of folded packet cover to Glasgow via Falmouth, dateline "Grenada 6th Feby. 1799" with a copy of a letter written January 20th, rated "2/5", double circle late Bishop receiving mark on the reverse, attractive and very fine; this marking was replaced at about this time with a new dated straight line handstamp of Grenada; this is the latest recorded example of the circular Crown marking; ex-Towers. 130 c image"Grenada/Mar 23 99" straight line dated handstamp, light but full strike of this new marking on reverse of folded packet letter to Glasgow via Falmouth, rated "4/10" in manuscript and late double circle Bishop receiving mark on reverse, minor deterioration along file fold, otherwise fine; this marking with date was instituted to establish independently when the letter was sent to prevent senders from making a request for insurance after they knew that a ship was lost by predating their letter; despite this being a light strike, this cover is important in that it is the earliest recorded example of this marking, being within less than two months of the latest recorded circular Crown handstamp offered above. 131 c image1815 "Grenada/Aug 8" straight line handstamp, variety without year date at this period, well struck examples on front and back of lengthy disinfected folded letter to London, forwarded to Burnham Grove, London backstamps, two disinfection slits cutting completely through the letter, probably disinfected at the disinfection stations at Motherbank or St. Just Pool where most mail through Falmouth would have been disinfected, very fine and very rare; this is one of only four disinfected covers recorded from Grenada, all of which were on the same packet, mail aboard the mail packets was not normally detained for disinfection. 132 c image1815 "Ship Letter/Grenada" double oval with Crown handstamp, on the reverse of folded letter to Edinburgh, Scotland, on front is a somewhat similar "Ship Letter/Dover" double oval and Crown handstamp where it made port in Britain, plus other transit markings including a boxed rate marking for the Scottish 1/2p toll tax charge, backstamped, very fine, an extremely rare and desirable ship cover; this Grenada ship marking is very scarce as this was applied to an outbound cover that had been given to the post office, ship letters were usually given directly to the ship captain rather than the post office, and the ship letter markings were normally applied to inbound covers carried by private ship to indicate the appropriate service and rate to be charged, this is one of only six recorded examples with this marking; ex-Hackmey. 133 c image1840 Soldier's concession rate folded letter of a sergeant in the 10th regiment on Grenada, light small Grenada double-arc c.d.s. with serifed letters on the reverse overstruck by British backstamp, rated 1p which was the favorable rate given to military personnel anywhere in the world back to England, forwarded from Windsor to Heightsbridge being charged another 1p, then missent to Hounslow before reaching its final destination, countersigned by the commanding officer as required, a lengthy letter to family, normal postal wear, otherwise very fine; a scarce and desirable usage. 134 c imageTwo line "Grenada/Ship Letter" handstamp, nice strike neatly applied to the reverse of a tiny cover to the Colonial Bank in Grenada in approximately 1842, on the front rated "4p" in manuscript, mended tear on the front from opening not affecting markings or detracting to any significant degree from the attractive appearance of this lovely usage, otherwise very fine; this marking is used the way it was intended by being applied to inbound ship letters, the London proof book shows that this marking, as well as the "Carriacou/Ship Letter" handstamp, were sent to Grenada on August 27, 1841, this is the unique example of the "Grenada/Ship Letter" marking, and no example of the Carriacou marking is known except with the "Ship Letter" removed; ex-Messenger and Hackmey. 135 c image1845 "Carriacou" brown straight line handstamp, with manuscript "23/8/45" date below, this rare marking is applied to the bottom left of a folded cover to The Secretary of the Wesleyan Missions in London, "1/-" crossed out and re-rated "2/-", backstamped, horizontal file fold between the handstamp and the date, very fine; Carriacou is the major island of the Grenadines that stretch between Grenada and St. Vincent belonging to Grenada, all mail from there is quite scarce, but this interesting marking was the first marking sent to that post office, it is found in the London proof book as "Carriacou/Ship Letter" and was sent to Grenada in August of 1841, evidently it was more useful as a normal town name marking as no example with the "Ship Letter" portion is known, though one of three examples dated 1842 shows a trace of it establishing that it indeed was removed, this 1845 cover is the only other cover with this rare straight line marking of a total of four examples. 136 c image"Grenada/AU 9 1847" sans serif double-arc c.d.s., well struck example of this surprisingly rare postmark, on reverse of folded cover to the Wesleyan Mission House in London, backstamped, very fine; this later style double-arc marking is normally quite common in most of the British Colonies, however in Grenada the similar marking with serifed letters was used much more extensively than this postmark; this is one of only three recorded examples, with only one used earlier in June of 1847. 138 c image"Carriacou/JU 78 (inverted) 1848/A" double-arc c.d.s. strong clear strike of this rare marking on the reverse of folded letter to Chester, England, date in postmark is in error with wrong month and inverted "78" which looks something like "28", should be "JL 8" as the letter is datelined "Carriacou 8th July 1848" with a copy of a letter of June 22nd, London transit and backstamped, very fine and choice; this cover has caused confusion as to the number of known examples of this rare marking from this small island of the Grenadines, it has been counted twice as a June 28th and July 8th cover, correcting this there are only three known letters, this being the latest full letter, plus there is a fourth example which is on a small fragment of a cover dated December 8, 1848, the letter offered here is the most interesting and attractive of this tiny census; ex-Russell Jones. 139 c image1853 Inbound interisland cover from Trinidad, attractive folded cover with (1p) Brownish grey Britannia (S.G. #6), an imperforate issue that shows evidence of having been unofficially rouletted on three sides, tied to folded cover to St.George's by boxed numeral "1" cancel, portion of small Trinidad double-arc c.d.s. on the reverse along with well struck large "Grenada/AP 10 1853" double-arc receiving c.d.s. across the letterjoin with inverted index letter "B", manuscript "4" rate that was to be collected from the recipient, the stamp paid internal Trinidad postage postage only, very fine and attractive; this cover makes a nice addition to a Grenada collection being very analogous to the 1p frankings from Grenada to Trinidad in the early 1860's. 140 c S.G. #CC2 imageS.G. #CC2, "Paid at Grenada" red Crowned circle handstamp, a wonderfully strong and clearly struck example of this scarce postmark, on neat folded letter to Madeira, well struck large "Grenada/23 OC 1855" double-arc c.d.s. on the reverse, red manuscript "2/-" rate marking, plus Madeira handstamp "100" rate marking, red Plymouth and London transits, a choice and extremely fine cover; this business letter (about Madeira wine of course, which wasn't selling well in Grenada) is one of the finest available Paid Crowned circle usages to a foreign country available.
