425 og PR54 image#PR54, $36.00 Brown rose special printing, without gum as issued, well centered, lovely rich and distinctive color, razor-sharp impression on hard white special printing paper, full intact perforations, trivial small thin spot of little consequence considering this stamp's unique status, very fine. The Special Printings produced by the Post Office Department in 1875 are among the greatest rarities in United States philately. These Special Printings, essentially for the purpose of having a complete display of all U.S. postal issues at the Centennial Exposition of 1876, were printed in extremely limited quantities. This is especially true of the 1875 Newspaper issues, and even more so for the four highest denomination stamps - the $24.00, $36.00, $48.00 and $60.00 values - all of which were printed in quantities of 100 each. However, Post Office Department records confirm that only two each of the $24.00 and $36.00 values, and one each of the $48.00 and $60.00 values were ever sold, with the remaining stamps having been destroyed. Thus, these high-value Newspaper Special Printings rank among the most elusive and important rarities known. In the case of the $36.00 value, while two were sold, only the example offered here has ever come to light and is the only copy certified as a genuine Special Printing by both the Philatelic Foundation and Professional Stamp Experts. This stunning and unique rarity has never appeared in a public auction sale. Hence, it has remained unpriced in the Scott catalog for years. To aid potential bidders as to this stamp's current market value we have a few facts that are of help in determining relative value. For instance, the Twelve Dollar Newspaper Special Printing (Scott #PR52), of which there are five confirmed copies, is priced in the latest edition of the Scott catalog at $75,000.00. Rarer yet is the Nine Dollar Newspaper Special Printing (Scott #PR51) of which only four copies were originally sold, and like the $36.00 offered here it is unpriced in Scott. Fortunately an example certified by the Philatelic Foundation was recently sold in the October 2002 auction of the Drucker Family Collection conducted by Robert A. Siegel Auction Galleries, Inc. giving bidders some insight as to the market value of these immense Special Printing rarities. It realized $115,500.00 (including premium) after very competitive bidding. Given that there were four copies sold of the Nine Dollar value and only two of the Thirty Six Dollar - with this being the only certified example - we feel our pre-sale estimate may prove to be conservative. Accompanied by 2002 PF and PSE certificates. (Image) Est. 100,000-150,000
