1880-1885 Special Printings of the 1879-1883 Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
292 og 192 image#192, 1c Dark ultramarine special printing, without gum as issued, a fabulous example of this tremendously rare stamp, being in a quality which places it among the very finest known, as this particular value is notorious for being found poorly centered and more often than not with faults, however the exciting copy offered here is one of the very few known that is completely sound and well centered, possessing an outstanding overall freshness, with sumptuously rich color, considerably better centered than the majority of known copies, as most are found centered strongly to the bottom, full intact perforations, actually extremely fine for this; there are probably no more than 30 to 40 copies of this stamp still in existence and only a tiny fraction of these are without faults, and fewer still are this well centered; the rarity of this stamp cannot be overstated, particularly in this exceptional quality, in fact, we do not believe a finer example has been offered on the auction market in many years; signed W.H.C. (Warren H. Colson) and accompanied by 1969 and 1989 PF certificates, as well as a 1992 PSE certificate; ex-Weisman and Lyons. (Image) 27,500.00

SOLD for $36,250.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
293 og 193 image#193, 2c Black brown special printing, without gum as issued, handsome example of this rarity, intense deep rich color and impression on bright paper, well centered within large margins, tiny natural inclusion in left margin, very fine and choice; approximately 50 to 60 copies of this value are thought to exist; 1993 PF certificate. (Image) 15,000.00

SOLD for $7,250.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
294 og 195 image#195, 6c Dull rose special printing, without gum as issued, a phenomenal quality example of this important Special Printing rarity, which is one of the most challenging of all the values to find in premium condition, being incredibly well centered (slightly to left as are virtually all known examples, however this far less so than other other we have seen), lavishly large margins which are most uncharacteristic, unusually strong color and impression for this, fully intact perforations all around, an extremely fine gem in every regard; unquestionably one of the very finest of the fewer than 30 copies believed to still exist; while we have had the privilege to sell some of the finest Bank Note Special Printings to have come on the market in recent years (i.e. the Lyons, Floyd, Lessin, McKinney and Ballman collections), none had a copy of the Six Cent Soft Paper Special Printing that comes close to the remarkable quality of the example offered here; signed W.H.C. (Warren H. Colson) and accompanied by a 1973 PF certificate; ex-Chapin. (Image) 25,000.00

SOLD for $35,000.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
295 og 196 image#196, 7c Scarlet vermilion special printing, without gum as issued, an exceptional example of this very scarce stamp, possessing extraordinarily large margins and being wonderfully well centered within them, gloriously rich and vibrant color, fully intact and even perforations, extremely fine; probably less than 100 copies exist of this value, and at least a third of these are found with faults; sound well centered examples such as this often command substantial premiums over their Scott catalog value; 1965 PF certificate; ex-Chapin. (Image) 5,000.00

SOLD for $5,250.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
296 og 197 image#197, 10c Deep brown special printing, without gum as issued, a superlative example of this extraordinarily rare stamp, in addition to being marvelously well centered within large margins, this remarkable stamp possesses the freshest and most vibrant color we have ever encountered, with a prooflike impression on immaculate paper, completely free of the faults that plague most known copies, extremely fine; without question among the finest Ten Cent Soft Paper Special Printings in existence, with no more than 35 thought to exist; 1950 PF certificate; ex-Chapin. (Image) 28,500.00

SOLD for $28,500.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
297 og 198 image#198, 12c Blackish purple special printing, without gum as issued, an impressive example in a quality that would be terribly challenging to duplicate, as this stamp possesses exceptional physical qualities seldom encountered on this value, including being exceedingly well centered within uncharacteristically large margins, plus its color is particularly deep and its impression quite strong, completely devoid of the faults that affect so many others, extremely fine; this gem stamp certainly ranks among the very finest of the approximately 75 copies known; 1967 PF certificate; ex-Chapin. (Image) 8,000.00

SOLD for $11,000.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
298 og 199 image#199, 15c Orange special printing, without gum as issued, a fabulously fresh example of this immensely rare stamp, boasting absolutely spectacular color that could not be more vivid or luxuriant, nor its impression more deeply etched, marvelously centered as well, with large margins all around, only the smallest (and trivial) facial rub below the bust of Webster separates this stamp from the gem category (and not even noted on the accompanying certificate), otherwise extremely fine; approximately 30 copies are thought to exist of this rarity; signed W.H.C. (Warren H. Colson) and accompanied by a clear 1973 PF certificate; ex-Chapin. (Image) 27,500.00

SOLD for $21,000.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
299 og 200 image#200, 24c Dark violet special printing, without gum as issued, an exceptionally handsome and choice example of this rare stamp, being in a quality few Special Printings exist, marvelously well centered within extravagantly large margins, sumptuously rich color and a sharp impression on bright paper, extremely fine gem; probably less than 75 examples exist of this value and this is easily one of the finest available; 1992 PF certificate; ex-"Connoisseur" Collection. (Image) 7,500.00

SOLD for $8,000.00
Closing..May-30, 04:00 PM
300 og 201 image#201, 30c Greenish black special printing, without gum as issued, impressive example of this important United States rarity, possessing exceptional centering within very large margins, rich characteristic greenish black color, strong impression as well, certainly extremely fine overall; certainly among the finest available of the approximately 40 examples thought to still exist of the Thirty Cent Soft Paper Special Printing; 1984 PF certificate; ex-Donaldson.
