1441 c S.G. #12 imageS.G. #12, 1871 6p Rose, tied to combination franking cover to H.B.M's Consul in Noumea, New Caledonia by rare "G.P.O./Fiji" cds of Levuka, transit was through New South Wales as was normal for foreign mail in this period where two 3p Dull green (S.G. #158) are tied by two clear strikes of "Sydney/NO 15 71/NSW" duplexes, one of which also ties the Fiji franking, backstamped in Noumea on December 5, 1871, the cover has minor flaws that are very typical of covers of this period (and usually much worse) including a light horizontal crease that affects the top of the New South Wales stamps, and filing pin holes at bottom left, but overall appearance is very attractive and this is indeed a very fine cover of the Cakobau Kingdom period. (Scott #17) The Royal Post of the King Cakobau government was the first official state post that took over the delivery of mails in late 1871 that the "Fiji Times Express" had been fulfilling in the previous year. While this service lasted for over three years, covers surviving from this period are decidedly rare. This is particularly true of the first "pence" issue of stamps. The stamps are scarce in their own right with only a total of 17,500 issued for all three values, with the 6p being the scarcest with an issue of 2,500. Further these are particularly rare used because surcharged values in the local "cents" currency were issued just three months later. The result is that covers with first pence issue are extremely rare, and though in popularity they fall in the shadow of the "Fiji Times Express" issue, the number of recorded covers with this issue is actually less than that of the "Fiji Times Express". The cover offered here is extremely rare in a number of respects. First it is believed that there are only a total of four first-issue Cakobau covers recorded. Additionally this is an unusual and rare foreign mail destination to the French Colony of New Caledonia, and finally the cancel used in posting from Fiji is one of the rarest Fiji cancels, being used for only 41 days and is only found on the unsurcharged pence issues. Of the four recorded covers only this and one other cover bear this cancel. A wonderful cover that is essential for any award winning collection documenting this period of Fiji's postal history and one of the most important covers in the Meis collection. Signed A.
