1422 og S.G. #5 imageS.G. #5, 1871 1p Black on rose laid batonne paper, position 14, mint single with three huge to large margins, the fourth is right along the frame line at left and this stamp illustrates how this phenomenon occurs, the vertical frame lines are continuous from top to bottom on the sheet, when the printing is strongly impressed on this thin brittle paper it frequently separates along this line, this stamp has the additional portion of the adjoining stamp at right where it separated there as well, nearly full rouletting at top and bottom, o.g., h.r., a sound fine stamp; 1976 BPA certificate (Scott #6; $950.00). 1428 og S.G. #6 var. imageS.G. #6 var., 1871 3p black on deep rose laid batonne paper, position 20, a magnificent mint single with stunning appearance, this stamp possesses the deep rose color that is found on the second issue, but only rarely, of the 35 or so second issue stamps found in the Meis collection only three or possibly four have this distinctive and rare shade, and all the more rare when it is found on the scarce 3p value, complete rouletting on the three margins on which it comes on this position, slightly closer but large bottom sheet-edge margin, o.g., thin spots that do not in any way detract from this stamp's extremely fine appearance; 1974 RPS certificate (Scott #7; $1,500.00+). 1429 O S.G. #6 imageS.G. #6, 1871 3p Black on rose laid batonne paper, position 20, an exceptionally scarce used example of this value, the reason that they converted half the 3p row to 9p values was because with the new rates they needed the 3p value the least, thus used examples are missing from the major collections and are probably rarer than reflected in the additional premium the catalogs assign to it, ms. "#" cancel, nearly three large margins, along the frame at left as often happens on strongly impressed prints, color is deep and close to the deep rose shade variety, thin spot and closed tear at right, still fine appearance and rare in any condition; Mr. Meis had to pay dearly just to acquire a used example (Scott #7; $2,000.00). 1430 og S.G. #6 imageS.G. #6, 1871 3p Black on rose laid batonne paper, position 21, a breathtakingly remarkable bottom sheet margin mint example, of all the "Fiji Times Express" single stamps in the Meis collection this is by far the most important, we have never even seen another example showing the large sheet margin at bottom, this margin shows an additional continuous horizontal sheet frame line 10mm below the bottom frame line of the stamp, furthermore this stamp establishes beyond doubt that rouletting was not placed on the outer sheet edges of the stamps, thus all stamps from the edges of the sheet can only have three rouletting lines at most, leaving only eight stamps in the sheet of 24 where four rouletting lines is even possible, how big and what was printed in the selvages is not fully known because almost invariably the selvage was trimmed away making this example all the more remarkable, in addition to the importance of this position is the stunning condition in which it is found, the stamp possesses bright fresh rose color, full original gum that is lightly hinged for these issues, and even the natural wrinkles caused by this gum do not take away from the remarkable soundness of this stamp which is almost never found on "Fiji Times Express" stamps, an extremely fine gem destined to bring an eye-popping realization (Scott #7; $1,500.00). 1433 ng S.G. #8a imageS.G. #8a, 1871 9p Black on rose laid batonne paper, variety comma after "Express", position 22, this variety is only found in this position (actually exists in the 3p on quadrille paper of the same position but not listed thus), it is hard to know whether this is an actual comma in the type, or a distorted period, as it shows better in some impressions than it does in others, this shows the comma configuration particularly well, full margins at top and bottom showing complete rouletting at top, along the frames at sides as often occurs, tiny thin spot and minute edge tear at top, otherwise fine and a nice example of this variety (Scott #9 var.). 1434 og S.G. #8 imageS.G. #8, 1871 9p Black on rose laid batonne paper, position 23, a magnificent mint example of this scarce value, because of a rate change the 9p value came into demand, so in the second issue the last three positions of the 3p row were changed to 9p making both of these values twice as scarce in printing quantity compared to the other values, this copy has full large margins all around with complete rouletting on the three sides on which it is found, bottom margin is closer as usual but still a full large margin, color is particularly strong and fresh, o.g., only the tiniest of thin specks keeps this outstanding stamp from being completely sound, extremely fine (Scott #9; $1,600.00). 1437 1876 1p-1/- "Fiji Times Express" First Imitations cplt., reference to this imitation was first made in the philatelic literature in 1876 and were thought to have been made by the publishers of the "Fiji Times" to satisfy collectors' requests, these are printed on vertically laid paper which varies from nearly white to pink, unlike the originals they were issued in sheets of 40 with eight vertical rows containing each of the five values from 1p at the top in ascending value order to 1/- at the bottom, printed rouletting lines are found around and between all stamps but the dashes only occasionally are impressed hard enough to puncture the paper as they did on the original, this lot contains a vertical strip of the five values on nearly white paper (fourth vertical row with horizontal crease in the 6p), a set of singles in pink color close to that of the originals, with small to large part gum and with additional roulette punctures not corresponding to the printed roulettes, and another set of singles in pale pink without gum and punches that look more like crude perforations than roulettes, couple with minor flaws, but an attractive and very fine display of this facsimile. 1438 1876 1p-1/- "Fiji Times Express" First Imitations cplt. in a full sheet of 40, this is the first imitation as described in the lot above, large to extra-large full selvages all around, the paper is nearly white and is hard and brittle, in thickness similar to the paper used for the issued stamps, without gum, the center 6p row has light horizontal creasing and there are other paper bends largely in the selvages, still a very fine and attractive full sheet of this historically significant reproduction of the "Fiji Times Express" stamps. 1439 1888 1p-1/- "Fiji Times Express" Second Imitations cplt. in a full sheet of 30, this imitation was first noted in 1888 and was issued some time between 1876 and 1888, in terms of appearance the individual stamps are more generally like the issued stamps but the sheet configuration is entirely different, the sheet consists of six vertical rows containing the five values with the 1/- value at top and the other values in descending order to the 1p at bottom, color is a strong lilac rose color on thicker wove paper, an interesting feature of this imitation is that the 1p and 3p in the right column are a different style numeral than the other five stamps of those values, this sheet has full gum as issued, h.r. in the selvage, left vertical row is nearly, but not completely, separated with hinge reinforcement, otherwise very fine; it is not likely that there are many full sheets still intact.
