Macklin & Co., 1c Black, rouletted, an incredible match stamp rarity, this stamp was printed by the American Phototype Co. in violation of the contract of Butler & Carpenter to produce private die proprietary stamps (American Phototype had a contract to produce wrappers not adhesive stamps), a controversy ensued between Macklin and Butler & Carpenter who considered the stamps that had been produced to be "a wretched piece of work and affords no guarantee against counterfeiting whatever", in fact counterfeits have been produced to defraud the collector not the government, evidently few of the genuine stamps were produced and the real quantity of genuine examples is very small, it is hard to know how many have survived as the few recorded in surveys may have included facsimilies as well as the real stamp, our guess is that there are a total of less than six genuine examples known, another factor that is not included in the Scott listing is that there are two papers on which this stamp is found, a thin white paper and this stamp which is on a thin yellowish tissue paper as was used for match wrappers which the American Phototype company normally produced, this is the only known example on this paper, small thin spot and light creases as would be expected on this fragile paper and these are actually very minor, otherwise very fine and one of the highlights of the Walter Harding Maurer collection; 1991 PF certificate; ex-Col. 1222 O imageNational Union Match Co., 1c Black on buff wrapper, an interesting match box wrapper, while not listed in Scott because it is not a proper revenue stamp it is neither fake or bogus, rather, according to the Boston Revenue Book, it is the product of a small match manufacturer who was avoiding the tax, so it is real but fraudulent, it is speculated that his wrapper was imitating Byam, Carlton & Co. wrappers and the proprietor was competing with that company for business, he was arrested and fined for his activities, because of his small activities these wrappers are quite rare, printed on the frail buff paper like other wrappers it is subject to the small flaws typical of these, this one with small edge faults and spot of toning in the left margin, otherwise very fine; a rare and desirable addition to a match stamp collection; ex-Joyce. 1223 O RO139b image#RO139b, N.Y. Match Company, 5c Blue, silk paper, an impressive eye-appealing example of a rare issue, this is undoubtedly one of the best centered of this stamp that is available, color is exceptionally bright and fresh, perforations are full and even all around, described in Joyce as a "superior example" not only because of its gorgeous appearance but because it lacks the faults that nearly all have, only the most trivial edge thin keeps this from being completely sound, extremely fine; ex-Joyce. 1228 O RO169d image#RO169d, Smith, E.K., 1c Blue, rouletted, a marvelous premium quality example of a very rare issue, virtually all of the less than ten or twelve copies that have survived are found with faults, remarkably this copy is completely sound and fresh, and in addition is amazingly well centered, extremely fine; certainly one of the finest if not the finest example of this rare and elusive stamp, even better than the one offered in our December 10, 1999 Collector's Series Sale, which brought a record $5,500.00. 1230 O RO1a/RO186a #RO1/RO186b, Substantial and high quality Match Stamp collection, consisting of over 200 stamps, mostly different but includes a dozen or so duplicates, this collection is noteworthy in its exceptional quality, these stamps are notorious for being in poor condition but the collector put his emphasis in acquiring not only as many different as possible, but locating them in as nice a condition as possible, his first concern was centering and appearance, the vast majority of the stamps in this collection will grade very fine or better and many will grade extremely fine in their appearance, he also put a secondary emphasis in soundness, recognizing that it was not always possible to get everything completely sound, but the result is that a great many are sound, and where faults are present, they normally are quite minor and particularly do not affect the appearance of the stamp, naturally most of the stamps are the more modestly priced items with catalog value from $5.00-$100.00 with few higher, but total catalog value comes to $8,000.00; a wonderful opportunity to acquire a quality basis of these issues on which to build, examination will not disappoint.
