1082 F 566 image#566, 15c Gray, tied to legal size first day cover, along with 5c Dark blue (#557) and horizontal pair of 1c Pilgrim Tercentenary by Washington, D.C. registry ovals, "Washington, D.C./Registered/Nov 11/1922" c.d.s. on reverse, registered and sent special delivery to Boston, very fine; this is the same correspondence and made by the same person as the unique three stamp combination first day cover offered in lot 1084. (Image) 600.00

SOLD for $190.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1083 F 566 image#566, 15c Gray, tied to long registered special delivery first day cover along with 1c Pilgrim (#548) and 6c Air post (#C1) by Washington, D.C. double oval pmks., violet "Washington, D.C. Registered/Nov 11/1922" pmks. on back, sent to Boston, attorney corner card, very fine; a scarce commercial first day cover. (Image) 600.00

SOLD for $130.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1084 F 566, 568, 570 #566, 568, 570, 15c Gray, 25c Yellow green and 50c Lilac three stamp combination first day cover, these three values (two of the 15c) tied to large (12 1/2"x9 1/2") manila legal envelope by "Washington, D.C./Registered/Nov 11/1922" violet handstamp c.d.s., franking also has nine different stamps for a total amount of $1.86 postage for registry and special delivery service to Boston, includes the 5c Dark blue and 11c Light bluish green, the only other values of the 1922 issue that had been issued to this point, two shades of the 3c Victory, 1c-5c Pilgrim Tercentenary cplt. and 6c-24c First Air Posts cplt., all of these are tied by "Washington, D.C." ovals, backstamped, cover has edge damage with tears and small pieces missing, none of which affects the stamps or markings, stamps are all fine-very fine; this is one of the most fascinating covers in the David Ahl collection, to our knowledge this is the only known combination first day cover of the 15c, 25c and 50c values which were issued on this date, but there are a number of other features that are of the great interest, while a legitimate commercial cover between two law firms, it is obvious the sender was a philatelist, we know of no other cover that uses the registry c.d.s. as a first day cancel, this was obviously purposely done on instruction of the sender, the stamps that frank the cover are every new issue of regular, commemorative and air post stamps for the last four years, all of this, along with shade varieties of the 3c Victory and freak perforations in the selvage of the 2c Pilgrim, show that this philatelist was having some fun, the result is a unique cover, that despite the condition problems and size, is one of the most important pieces for the first day cover collector of these issues. (Image) 7,000.00

SOLD for $3,750.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1085 F 567 image#567, 20c Carmine Rose, fresh single centered to top, tied to neatly typed addressed first day cover by "Washington, D.C./May 1/1923" machine cancel, very clean and extremely fine cover. (Image) 600.00

SOLD for $200.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1086 F 567 image#567, 20c Carmine Rose, very well centered single tied to Philip H. Ward first day cover by very scarce "San Francisco, Calif./May 1/1923" machine cancel, blue post office handstamp at left indicating the cover had been received under cover from Philadelphia as all Ward covers appear to have been, opened roughly causing tears at top, not affecting the stamp, still very fine appearance; the rarity of this city's posting is evidently due to the brief three-day notice that was given for the issuance of this in San Francisco, this was hardly enough time for the East Coast dealers, who serviced most of the covers, to send covers for cancelling, the exception to this was Philip Ward, who apparently was able to obtain advance notification, thus one of the rarest official city first day covers came about. (Image) 1,500.00

SOLD for $900.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1087 F 568 image#568, 25c Yellow Green, unusually well centered single tied to marvelously fresh first day cover by "Washington, D.C./Nov 11/1922" machine cancel, serviced by Philip H. Ward, Jr., extremely fine. (Image) 675.00

SOLD for $475.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1088 F 569 image#569, 30c Olive brown, very well centered example with intense color, tied by "Washington, D.C./Mar 20/1923" machine cancel, faint bit of edge discoloration to cover, otherwise very fine. (Image) 825.00

SOLD for $325.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1089 F 570 image#570, 50c Lilac, very well centered single with marvelously intense color (short corner perf.), tied to fresh first day cover serviced by Edward C. Worden by "Washington, D.C./Nov 11/1922" machine cancel, neat typed address, extremely fine and scarce first day cover. (Image) 1,500.00

SOLD for $700.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1090 F 571 image#571, $1.00 Violet black, fresh and well centered single, tied to lovely first day cover by "Washington, D.C./Feb 12/1923" machine cancel, strong and clear strike, serviced by Edward C. Worden with his neat typed address, cover slightly reduced at left but of no consequence, extremely fine; the Springfield first day cover of this issue has always been considered the rarer of the two cities, our observation is that they are of about equal rarity and in either form a very difficult first day cover. (Image) 7,000.00

SOLD for $4,500.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1091 F 571 image#571, $1.00 Violet black, wonderfully well centered single, tied by precisely struck "Springfield, Ill./Feb 12/1923" duplex handstamp cancel, neat Edward C. Worden address, extremely fine; first day covers of this value are all quite rare, this is confirmed by the fact that only seventeen covers are known from Springfield, particularly elusive in such choice condition. (Image) 6,500.00

SOLD for $5,000.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1092 F 572 image#572, $2.00 Deep blue, well centered bottom sheet-margin plate no. 14306 single, tied to Edward C. Worden first day cover by "Washington, D.C./Mar 20/1923" machine cancel, only the faintest trace of perf. toning, for some reason this is rather typical on covers of this value serviced by Worden, in all other respects a very fine cover; a highly desirable example of this Two Dollar value that only rarely comes on the market. (Image) 17,000.00

SOLD for $18,000.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1093 F 573 image#573, $5.00 Carmine and blue, top sheet-margin plate no. F14327 single, tied to first day cover by "Washington, D.C./Mar 20/1923" machine cancel, serviced by Edward C. Worden with his typed address, there is a very trivial diagonal bend to the cover at left and there are a few minor stains mostly confined to the far left; when this cover was offered in our September 1996 Unicover Corporation Museum Collection auction it realized at that time $20,000.00, plus the 10% buyer's premium, we also expressed the opinion that the stains described could be professionally and expertly removed to yield a particularly attractive example of this important first day cover rarity, we are still of that opinion, particularly since only eight covers are known of this value on first day cover, being equally divided with four each of the machine cancels and duplex handstamps, certainly a wonderful opportunity to acquire a first day cover typically unavailable at any price; clear 1978 PF certificate. (Image) 30,000.00

SOLD for $30,000.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1094 F 576, 617-19 image#576, 617-19, 1 1/2c Yellow brown pair and 1c-5c Lexington-Concord cplt. on attractive combination first day cover, all are tied by "Washington/D.C./Apr 4/1925" duplexes, very fine and scarce; few sets of the Lexington-Concord were combined with the regular issues that came out on the same day. (Image) Est. 400-500

SOLD for $400.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1095 EDU 579 image#579, 2c Carmine coil waste, a well centered single tied to the earliest documented usage cover by clear "New York, N.Y./Feb 20/1923" machine cancel, cover has corner card of Synthetic Organic Products Co. and was posted to Chico, California, edge wear causing light creasing to cover, mostly at right but not affecting the stamp, fine cover; the perforating as sheet stamps of the extra impressions of stamps that could not be made into coils was not considered by the post office to be a new issue of stamps, thus there is no documentation of when these were issued and first day covers cannot exist, given the January 1, 1923 date of the issued coil stamps it is surmised that this issue came out some time after that, the earliest date of usage has been moved back several times and now stands at this February 20, 1923 date, which does not leave much room for revision, this cover was discovered by the 1922-26 Issue specialist Gary Griffith; 1978 PF certificate. (Image) Est. 1,000-1,500

SOLD for $1,700.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1096 F 583a image#583a, 2c Carmine booklet pane of six, with full tab, neatly tied to an immaculate first day cover by "Washington, D.C./Aug 27, 1926" duplex cancels, typewritten Wm. H. Cornish address, Washington , D.C. special delivery backstamp, very fine; a choice example of this very scarce first day cover. (Image) 1,500.00

SOLD for $750.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1097 F 583a image#583a, 2c Carmine booklet pane of six, centered just into the design at left, tied by "Washington/D.C./Aug 27/1926" duplexes to air mail envelope with corner card of Albert E. Gorham, who serviced this cover, backstamped Philadelphia, sealed tears to the tab in removing it from the booklet, fine and scarce; this is the only booklet pane of the five different panes that were issued for the regular issues of 1922-35 that is normally available on first day cover, and even it is quite scarce with probably less than a dozen examples known, most of these being serviced by Nickles, making this one of Gorham even scarcer. (Image) 1,500.00

SOLD for $725.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1098 F 585-86 image#585, 586, 4c Yellow brown and 5c Blue combination first day cover, stamps attractively tied to air mail envelope with "The Home of the Postage Stamp" corner card by "Washington, D.C./Apr. 4/1925" machine cancel, backstamped Chicago the next day, very fine and scarce combination. (Image) 300.00

SOLD for $150.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1099 F 585-86 image#585, 586, 4c Yellow brown and 5c Blue combination first day cover, attractively centered singles of these values that were issued on the same day, tied to air mail envelope with "The Home of the Postage Stamp" corner card by scarcer "New York, N.Y./G.P.O./Apr. 4/1925" duplexes, backstamped Chicago the next day, very fine and scarce combination from an unofficial first day city. (Image) 300.00+

SOLD for $250.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
1100 F 585-86 image#585, 586, 4c Yellow brown and 5c Blue combination first day cover, both stamps tied by killer portion of scarce "Broad St. Term. R.P.O./Phila., Pa./4 Apr 1925" duplex (date inverted except for the "4") to air mail envelope with "The Home of the Postage Stamp" corner card, backstamped Chicago the next day, very fine; this cachet maker had a penchant for making these combination covers from unusual unofficial first day post offices, besides the three covers offered here we have also seen an "Air Mail Field New York" cancel, all are very scarce. (Image) 300.00+

SOLD for $325.00
Closing..Mar-08, 09:00 AM
