United States Stamps continued...

1861 First Design "August" Issues continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
81 ng 62 image#62, 90c Dull blue "August", unused, virtually perfectly centered within large margins, deep luxuriant color and a remarkably detailed impression, there is a small tear and thin spot (both at top), neither of which affect the extremely fine and handsome appearance of this great rarity. A review of the Philatelic Foundation records indicates that they have certified only 20 stamps as genuine examples of the Ninety Cent "August". There is an additional uncertified copy housed in the New York Public Library collection, presumably never to be made available to the collecting public. Of the 20 certified examples, over half are found without gum, as is this stamp. Considering the last two examples of Scott #62 that have appeared at auction (both in Shreves sales) have realized $60,500.00 (ex-Floyd) and $47,850.00 (ex-Lessin) respectively, the example offered here may be the last affordable copy of this rarity available to most collectors. Accompanied by a 1974 PF certificate. (Image) 22,500.00
