866 og PR100 image#PR100, $3.00 Scarlet, brilliantly fresh, sumptuously rich and vibrant color, well centered, full o.g., minor h.r., very fine for this. A magnificent example of this incredibly rare stamp. This being the only Scott #PR100 we have ever offered in our auctions, although this is the second time we have had the pleasure to sell this very stamp. Its first appearance was in our May 1998 sale of the Eliot H. Weisman collection. Because it was the first appearance of a Scott #PR100 in many years, it attracted extraordinarily spirited bidding, realizing $23,100.00 against a then catalog value of $7,500.00. After searching literally for hours trying to find this stamp's equal in any past auction catalog, we have come to the conclusion that not only is this stamp immensely rare in terms of the number known, but we are certain that this is the only sound, original gum Three Dollar Bureau issue newspaper extant. To more accurately gauge the current value of this remarkable stamp, we refer prospective bidders to our May 2002 sale of the Joseph E. Lessin collection. While he did not have an example of this stamp, his collection did contain a sound, original gum example of the Sixty Cent Bureau issue newspaper - an equally rare stamp - with a lesser catalog value of $13,500.00, versus $18,000.00 for a #PR100. Mr. Lessin's #PR98 realized a record price of $60,500.00, a clear indication of the popularity and appreciation of stamps from this immensely rare series. Accompanied by 1967 and 1992 PF certificates, as well as a 1992 PSE certificate; ex-Engel, "Connoisseur" Collection and Weisman. (Image) 18,000.00

867 og PR101 image#PR101, $6.00 Pale blue, warm rich color distinctive only to the Bureau issues, full original gum, few small thin spots, trivial repaired corner perforation tip, tiny natural inclusion visible only on reverse, very fine appearance. A handsome and desirable example of the rarest regularly issued Newspaper stamp. Only 14 examples have been certified by the Philatelic Foundation and this is one of the few still retaining its full original gum. Virtually all have faults to some degree. One of the rarest stamps in all of United States philately, which is seldom offered in any condition. In looking over many of the great United States collections of the past, this stamp is either found faulty or totally lacking altogether. Accompanied by a 1996 PF certificate. (Image) 50,000.00
