77 og 57 image#57, 5c Brown "August", an incredibly fresh original gum example of this important rarity, possessing a remarkable overall brilliance very few of the other existing examples can boast, with sumptuously rich and intense color, plus its impression could not be more deeply etched on bright crisp paper, extraordinarily well centered, full clean o.g. that has been relatively lightly hinged, only a small gum crease at bottom (which are endemic to virtually all of the original gum "August" issues) is the only thing separating this stamp from the gem catagory, very fine; only 35 examples of the Five Cent "August" issue are known (two of which are cancelled) and only 16 of the existing population still retain any portion of their original gum; none of the existing original gum examples are completely fault free, with this particular copy being among the best of this elite group; 1989 PF certificate. (Image) 14,000.00

SOLD for $11,500.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
78 og 59 image#59, 12c Black "August", fabulously well centered amid very large margins, strikingly intense color and a superbly detailed impression on especially bright paper, full clean o.g. that has been relatively lightly hinged, faint diagonal crease which is not readily apparent nor does it affect the magnificent overall appearance of this remarkable stamp, otherwise extremely fine. According to the Philatelic Foundation's records, there are only 15 stamps which have been certified as genuine Twelve Cent "August" issues (one of which has been cancelled "New" in manuscript). There is an additional uncertified example housed in the New York Public Library's collection. Upon comparing the example offered here to the other recorded examples, it becomes readily apparent that there is no other copy that possesses the superb centering and margins that this stamp features - particularly compared to those which still retain their original gum. An extraordinary opportunity to acquire one of the greatest rarities in United States philately in beautiful original gum condition. Accompanied by a 1988 PF certificate; ex-Caspary and Cole. (Image) 40,000.00

SOLD for $32,500.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
79 og 60 image#60, 24c Dark violet "August", a magnificent quality example of this very rare stamp, easily among the finest in existence, as this impressive stamp features near perfect centering within large margins, gloriously rich and unmistakable "August" color and a crisp impression on unusually bright paper, full o.g., extremely fine; a stunning original gum Twenty Four Cent "August" issue; 1984 PF certificate. (Image) 6,500.00

SOLD for $8,500.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
80 og 61 image#61, 30c Red orange "August", full original gum, incredibly fresh overall, with spectacular eye-arresting color in a very deep shade, strong detailed impression on fresh crisp paper, particularly well centered for this typically poorly centered value, light vertical crease as often found on these, still very fine and quite choice. There are only 28 certified examples of Scott #61 found in the Philatelic Foundation records, plus there is an additional uncertified example in the New York Public Library collection. One common characteristic of the Thirty Cent value is the presence of creasing found on most of the original gum examples. In many cases the creasing is severe and is an accepted condition factor for serious collectors attempting to assemble a set of "August" issues. In the instance of the brilliantly fresh example offered here, the creasing is not offensive and does not detract from its exceptional overall appearance. This stamp comes from what was once the only known multiple of this stamp - a horizontal pair - originally contained in the famous Lilly collection. This was the left stamp in the pair. Accompanied by a 1989 PF certificate; ex-Lilly. (Image) 17,500.00

SOLD for $13,000.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
