United States Stamps continued...

1916-1917 Washington-Franklin Issues continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
581 O 482A image#482A, 2c Deep rose imperforate, Ty. Ia, Schermack Ty. III perforations, exceptionally well centered for this, particularly when compared to the existing population, with full Schermack perforations on both sides, being just one of a very few that possesses this important and eye-appealing trait, gorgeous intensely rich deep rose shade which is distinctive only to this type, very light wavy line machine cancel, very fine and choice. This stamp was issued specifically for use by the Schermack Company in their own patented stamp-affixing machines. Much like the 1908 Four Cent Brown Imperforate, the stamp dispensing and affixing machines applied the stamps one at a time, often slicing the stamps not on the oblong perforations as intended, but typically well into the design and usually cutting off the perforations on at least one side. That is why well centered examples of both Scott #314A and #482A are highly prized by collectors. The experimental nature of both stamps, issued without advance notice, resulted in few collectors saving and seeking out these rarities. An exceptional quality used example of this important 20th century rarity. Only 38 used examples are recorded (two being in a unique pair), and this example from the Ballman collection ranks among the top 10-20%, being not only one of the few surviving sound examples, but among the finest centered, fully perforated examples as well. Light expert's handstamp on reverse and accompanied by a 1974 PF certificate. (Image) 35,000.00

Bloch in corner sheet selvage. (image 582a) (Image) 25,000.00+

597 Obl 505 image#505, 5c Rose error, double error in a block of twelve, an incredibly rare used example of this popular double error, being in a quality that would be impressive for a mint example, let alone used, which is far more elusive to find, marvelously well centered and margined throughout, bright color, very light and unobtrusive Washington, D.C. double oval postmarks (much more desirable than the nebulous "mute" double oval cancels), extremely fine; very few used double error blocks exist and this example is quite likely to be the finest available. 600 og 518b image#518b, $1.00 Deep brown, fresh mint example of this rare and often misidentified shade, possessing true deep brown color (actually the shade identification in Scott is a misnomer, as examples of this stamp must display hues of yellow throughout the design in order to be correctly identified as #518b), better centering than usually encountered on this difficult stamp, o.g., lightly hinged, nearly very fine; 1997 PF certificate. (Image) 1,800.00
