Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
207 og 167 image#167, 1c Ultramarine special printing, without gum as issued, a spectacular example of this especially difficult Special Printing rarity, possessing remarkable physical qualities, most impressive being its magnificent centering amid very large margins (unlike any other example we could find in our records), intensely rich color in a deep shade, with a sharp prooflike impression on bright paper, scissor separated as almost always, however this stamp is one of the few that exists with its perforations completely intact, an extremely fine gem; among the top three quality examples in existence of the approximately 35 to 40 known; a remarkable condition rarity for the collector attempting to assemble the finest possible set of Special Printings; 1957 PF certificate. 209 og 169 image#169, 3c Blue green special printing, without gum as issued, bottom sheet-margin partial imprint single, once part of the unique Earl of Crawford imprint strip, a fabulous quality example of this important special printing rarity and, according to our extensive research of nearly all the great name sales of the past, we are quite certain that this is one of the top two finest existing examples among the approximately 35 to 40 surviving copies, as this stamp possesses physical qualities that are almost impossible to find on the Hard Paper Special Printings, including being extraordinarily well centered (there are no known perfectly centered copies), with very large margins all around, and just as impressive is the fact that its perforations are not only fully intact, but they have not been scissor separated as usual, leaving its perforations in a condition unlike any other existing copy, furthermore this stamp boasts truly prooflike color and impression on immaculate paper, an extremely fine gem for the finest collection; 1992 PF certificate; ex-Earl of Crawford. (Image) 12,500.00

SOLD for $23,000.00

212 og 172 image#172, 10c Pale brown special printing, without gum as issued, a phenomenal quality example of the most difficult value of the entire Hard Paper Special Printings series to find in any kind of acceptable quality, with this particular copy being the ultimate antithesis of what is normally found, as it features absolutely flawless centering (which exists on no other example) amid extravagantly large margins, plus we know of no other whose perforations are as fully intact as those found on this remarkable stamp, brilliantly fresh overall, with rich luxuriant color and an excellent clarity of impression on bright crisp paper, a superb gem in every regard; by far the finest existing Ten Cent Hard Paper Special Printing, with only approximately 40 surviving examples; easily one of the greatest condition rarities in all of United States philately; 1993 PF certificate. 214 og 174 image#174, 15c Bright orange special printing, without gum as issued, an exceedingly choice example of one of the most difficult of all the Hard Paper Special Printings to find in premium condition, being one of the very few in existence whose perforations, while scissor separated as almost always, are essentially intact, in fact, we estimate that well over two thirds of the existing population have their perforations trimmed off on one or more sides, brilliantly fresh, with radiant color and impression on immaculate paper, well centered, very fine; fewer than 40 examples of this value are thought to still exist; 1987 PF certificate. (Image) 12,500.00

(Image) 10,000.00

SOLD for $6,750.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
217 og 177 image#177, 90c Violet carmine special printing, without gum as issued, a superlative example of this tremendously rare stamp, being in a condition which places it among the top two or three in existence, featuring physical attributes that are almost impossible to find on any of the Hard Paper Special Printings, magnificently well centered within very large margins, spectacularly intense color and a prooflike impression on bright crisp paper, and most impressive of all is the fact that this stamp's perforations are fully and completely intact, a trait which exists on only a tiny fraction of the known population, an extremely fine gem for the collector determined to assemble a truly remarkable set of Special Printings; it is estimated that only 40 to 45 examples still exist of the Ninety Cent value; 1952 PF certificate. (Image) 12,500.00

SOLD for $21,000.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
218 og 180 image#180, 2c Carmine vermilion special printing, without gum as issued, marvelously well centered amid extravagantly large margins which are most uncharacteristic of this, strikingly intense color in a deep "fiery" shade, strong highly detailed impression on fresh paper, its perforations are completely intact and not scissor separated as found on so many of the Hard Paper Special Printings, very fine and exceedingly choice. A remarkable quality example of this great United States rarity. There are only 23 examples recorded, one of which is housed in the New York Public Library's collection. Of the known examples, the copy offered here from the Ballman collection ranks not only among the finest available, but it is the finest quality copy to come on the market in many years - eclipsing the examples found in such luminary collections as those formed by Messrs. Zoellner, Golin, Lyons, Floyd and Lessin. An extraordinary opportunity to acquire one of the premier examples of this important rarity. A stamp which has graced several important collections over the years. Accompanied by 1949 and 1988 PF certificates; ex-Lilly and Cole. (Image) 30,000.00

SOLD for $32,500.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
219 og 181 image#181, 5c Bright blue special printing, without gum as issued, extraordinarily well centered amid lavishly large margins which are unequalled by any other existing example, luxuriously rich color and a strong well defined impression on fresh paper, full completely intact perforations which have not been scissor separated as found on several, extremely fine. An incredibly rare stamp of which only nine examples have been certified as genuine by the Philatelic Foundation. There is a tenth example recorded in the New York Public Library collection. The example offered here from the Ballman collection ranks among the top two or three in existence, and is the finest to appear at auction in well over a decade. The last #181 to be sold at auction was in our October 2001 sale of the William S. Floyd collection. The Floyd example, while quite choice, does not possess the remarkable centering and margins that the Ballman copy boasts. Nevertheless, it realized $88,000.00 and we fully expect that the copy offered here will well eclipse the Floyd realization - particularly in light of recent record realizations of $154,000.00 and $165,000.00 for its Soft Paper counterpart (Scott #204) - which exists in a "quantity" of more than twice that of Scott #181. A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the serious collector to obtain one of the most important rarities in all of United States philately in a most remarkable condition. Signed "W.H.C." (Warren C. Colson) and accompanied by 1983 and 1990 PF certificates. (Image) 75,000.00

SOLD for $115,000.00
Closing..Oct-18, 12:30 PM
