United States Stamps continued...

1869 Pictorials continued...
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
101 og 122 image#122, 90c Carmine and black, a fabulous quality mint example of this 19th century rarity, possessing absolutely flawless centering amid lavishly large margins, strong colors and excellent clarity of impressions contribute further to this magnificent stamp's overall eye appeal, unusually even and intact perforations surround the whole, full o.g. that has been very lightly hinged, extremely fine; a stunning and choice mint example of the Ninety Cent 1869 Pictorial; one of the finest mint #122's to appear on the market in the past several years; 1971 and 1995 PF certificates; ex-Mary Flagler Cary. (Image) 9,250.00

SOLD for $13,500.00
Closing..Sep-13, 05:00 PM
102 og 122a image#122a, 90c Carmine and black, without grill, the mint example offered here of this important rarity is, in our opinion, one of the great condition rarities of 19th century United States philately, as it is in a condition that would be impressive for any stamp of the era, but is especially so for a stamp that exists in such minute quantities, boasting a phenomenal overall freshness and brilliance that must be seen in person to fully appreciate, with spectacularly intense colors and prooflike impressions on bright crisp paper, magnificently well centered amid lavishly large margins, its reverse is equally remarkable, featuring full clean o.g. that has been only very lightly hinged, an extremely fine gem for the finest collection; without question one of the very finest available of the mere 21 examples certified by the Philatelic Foundation, only seven of which are completely sound and have either part or full original gum; 1991 PF certificate. (Image) 16,000.00

SOLD for $16,000.00
Closing..Sep-13, 05:00 PM
103 O 119b image#119b, 15c Brown and blue, Ty. II, Center Inverted, used, wonderfully rich colors and highly detailed impressions on bright paper, central circle of wedges postmark, lightly and unobtrusively struck so that the inverted vignette shows clearly, centered just slightly to bottom right, but perforations are well clear of the design and is far better centered than the vast majority of known examples, very fine and exceedingly choice. One of the finest used examples of the 91 recorded Fifteen Cent 1869 Pictorials with Inverted Centers. The rarity of this stamp in such choice fault-free condition is underscored by the fact that less than fifteen of the known examples are found fault free and this minute number includes those copies which have trivial corner creases - which this copy has none. More than half of the existing population have serious faults and/or repairs. A stamp of extraordinary beauty and rarity. The perfect stamp for the collector who has been patiently waiting for a truly choice example of this well-known and popular error rarity to make an appearance on the auction market. Accompanied by a photocopy of a 1970 PF certificate, as well as a 1995 PF certificate. ex-Choban. (Image) 18,000.00

SOLD for $23,000.00
Closing..Sep-13, 05:00 PM
104 O 120b image#120b, 24c Green and violet, Center Inverted, used, magnificently bright and fresh, gloriously rich colors and strong detailed impressions on especially clean paper, very light and unobtrusive black cork postmark which leaves the inverted central vignette clearly visible, plus there is a bit of a red postmark at top left further complementing this stamp's overall eye appeal, unusually even and intact perforations all around, centered just slightly to bottom, but clearly this stamp is among the finest centered available, very fine and choice. Only 88 copies of the perforated Twenty Four Cent 1869 Pictorial with the Center Inverted exist. This number includes four unused stamps, two used pairs, one block of four and a single on cover - reducing the number of available single used examples to 75. Of this small existing population only a select few are completely fault free as is the stamp offered here. Fewer still possess the overall beauty and eye appeal of this remarkable stamp. We estimate that there are no more than two or three Scott #120b's that are in comparable gem quality. A rare opportunity to acquire one of the premier quality examples of one of the most famous errors in United States philately. Accompanied by a 1988 PF certificate. ex-Cole and Koppersmith. (Image) 19,000.00

SOLD for $32,500.00
Closing..Sep-13, 05:00 PM
105 O 121b image#121b, 30c Blue and carmine, Center Inverted, used, phenomenally well centered amid enormously large margins unrivaled by any other existing example, gorgeous rich colors and unusually strong impressions on fresh paper, wonderfully postmarked by both a neat circle of wedges cancel and a portion of a lovely blue French transit c.d.s. of Calais, small skillful repair in margin at top right, plus a faint trace of a trivial corner crease at top left, neither of which affects this stamp's spectacular extremely fine appearance. The McKinney example is, unquestionably, the most spectacular appearing example of this major rarity in existence - combining perfect centering, huge margins, freshness of colors and unusual cancellations all on a single example. Of the 36 recorded Thirty Cent Inverts this is the only example known with the blue French transit c.d.s., clearly an indication that this stamp once originated on a cover to France. The desirability of this remarkable stamp is barely diminished by the presence of the previously mentioned imperfections. If this stamp were devoid of these flaws this would clearly be the finest example extant. Even so, this remains one of the most beautiful and eye appealing copies available, and would make an immediate and impressive addition to an album or exhibition page. Accompanied by a 1997 PF certificate. (Image) 65,000.00

SOLD for $37,500.00
