1851-1856 Issues
Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
9 O 5 image#5, 1c Blue, Ty. I, position 7R1E, extraordinarily large margins virtually all around, just clear at bottom, being one of the very few existing examples whose design is completely intact all around, wonderfully fresh and distinctive early Plate 1 color, unusually lightly cancelled with a town c.d.s. which reads "24/Ala." at bottom, leaving the important Type I design characteristics completely unobscured, couple of miniscule surface scrapes that are so insignificant as to not even be mentioned on the accompanying certificate, extremely fine. An incredibly choice example of one of the rarest and most sought-after classic United States stamps. One position, the legendary position 7R1E, provides the philatelic world with the only full Type I design as originally intended, a characteristic no other One Cent imperforate displays. According to the recently published The Wagshal Census of 7R1E by Jerome S. Wagshal, there are only 90 confirmed examples of the imperforate Type I, the vast majority of which are used. When one eliminates those found on cover or in multiples, there are a mere 56 single examples available to collectors. Of this population very few are found with the overall eye-appealing characteristics this stamp possesses - most particularly its wide margins displaying a completely intact design. Fewer still have such wonderfully fresh color and are so lightly cancelled. A large majority of the recorded examples of Scott #5 have faults ranging from rather minor to severe. The couple of truly miniscule surface scrapes mentioned above are of no consequence. In fact, this stamp has traded several times in the past without any mention of surface scrapes and the Philatelic Foundation in 1999 (its most recently issued certificate for the stamp) have determined the stamp to be completely sound and issued an unqualified "it is genuine" certificate. In our opinion, this stamp is among the finest examples available of this world-class rarity. ex-Puliafito. (Image) 45,000.00

10 O 6 image#6, 1c Blue, Ty. Ia, position 95R4, the "curl on shoulder" variety, a stunning used example of this very rare stamp, possessing fabulously wide and incredibly well balanced margins all around, plus its color is quite striking being in an intense dark shade, and its impression could not be more deeply etched on bright paper showing the Type Ia design characteristics very clearly, wonderfully postmarked with a bold central strike of a "balloon" type town c.d.s., an extremely fine used gem for the finest collection; without question among the very finest examples of the imperforate Type Ia stamps extant; the extreme rarity of the Type Ia stamps is due to the fact that only 18 of the 20 positions on the bottom row of plate 4 sheet produced this type, which shows a full design at bottom; 1985 and 1999 PF certificates. (Image) 11,000.00

SOLD for $12,500.00

I, a seldom seen mint example of this rare classic stamp, three large margins, fourth at bottom just touching, rich luxuriant color and a deeply etched impression, full o.g., h.r., nearly very fine; one of the very few certified sound original gum 1855 Ten Cent Type I imperforates in existence; 1997 PF certificate. 18 og 14 image#14, 10c Green, Ty. II, an incredibly choice mint example, in a quality which is rarely encountered, possessing an uncommon overall freshness which few stamps from this classic era still retain, featuring gorgeous intense color and a sharp prooflike impression which are both wonderfully contrasted by its bright white paper, large to huge margins all around, full clean o.g., lightly hinged, extremely fine; a superb gem of extraordinary beauty; 1987 and 1995 PF certificates. (Image) 4,000.00

SOLD for $8,500.00
Closing..Sep-13, 05:00 PM
19 og 17 image#17, 12c Black, a fabulously fresh and choice mint example, possessing an overall freshness and brilliance which few other known mint copies can boast, featuring truly prooflike color and an excellent clarity of impression on remarkably bright paper, four particularly large and wonderfully well balanced margins, pristine full o.g. which is both unusually clean and lightly hinged, superb. The 1851 Twelve Cent Washington is one of the most difficult of all the early classics to find mint, let alone in premium quality. And to find one still retaining its original gum is an immense rarity. When one does encounter a mint/unused copy they are invariably found without gum. Very few completely sound original gum examples exist of Scott #17, and fewer still are found in such outstanding condition as the one offered here from the McKinney collection. We believe that it is very telling than none of the great United States collections sold in the past several years (Wampler, Zoellner, Weisman, Golin, Lyons and Floyd) had an original gum example of this stamp (some did not even have an unused copy). The example offered here surely ranks among the finest mint original gum singles in existence, as it combines all of the crucial elements (color, impression, margins, freshness and gum) to be considered a true condition rarity; 1998 PF certificate.
