24 P image1d. blue on white wove paper (S.G. Spec. DP20 State 3b), a sheet complete except for the top left corner pair, nine stamps handstamped "No 712" and tested with Prussic acid (misspelled), potash, tartaric acid, turps, and creosote, manuscript notations of Joshua Bacon "E5" (order of goodness, i.e. very poor), "No 3 plain" (the ink proposed for the 2d. blue by Rowland Hill in his "Report on the Obliteration of Postage Stamps" to the Chancellor of the Exchequer on 14.9.40) and identification of the various chemical agents; this important sheet emanates from the Perkins, Bacon archives and was found in the famous wrapper of "Specimens of the Postage Stamps sent to Mr. R. Hill, Mr. R. Phillips and experimented on by ourselves. September 1st 1840" by Major G.W.G. Allen and Charles Nissen in 1935; illustrated in "Rainbow Trials", p. 116; ex-Major Allen and "Tes". 29 Pc image1840 1d. black Plate 2 JF on envelope for trial removal of Maltese Cross in red, large even margins, contemporary manuscript endorsement on inside flap "The label on this envelope has passed through the Post Office, & received the red stamp, which has afterwards been obliterated by an easy chemical process" repeated on front, with Treasury Registration No. "989/40" indicating that it had been used in the 1840 trials for the removal of cancellations by chemical processes; a unique and historically significant artifact of the trial cancellation period, as this is believed to be the only example of a cancellation removal trial on a cover in private hands, with the other institutionalized in the British Library as part of the Tapling Collection; 1991 BPA certificate and 2000 RPS certificate.
