39 og 17 image#17, 12c Black, a phenomenal mint horizontal pair, possessing physical characteristics that simply could not be improved upon, including boasting an overall freshness and brilliance we have never seen on any mint example of this stamp, let alone a pair, enormous margins all around including a sheet margin at right and significant portions of four adjoining stamps, truly prooflike color and impression on bright fresh paper, full o.g. which is unusually clean and shows just the barest suggestion of hinging, superb. The 1851 Twelve Cent Washington is one of the most difficult of all the early classics to find mint, let alone in this incomparable quality. And to find one still retaining its original gum is an immense rarity. To then encounter a pair containing two such examples is truly a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence. One of the great condition rarities of the classic imperforate era of United States philately. A pair without equal and deserving of placement in the finest collection.
