106 og 64 image#64, 3c Pink, an extremely rare and choice mint example of one of the most elusive of all 19th century U.S. stamps to locate mint and in sound condition, this remarkable stamp is even more desirable as it is not only completely sound but it is in premium condition as well, in addition to still retaining its original gum, being incredibly fresh with intensely rich and true "pink" color (not at all oxidized which affects most mint singles), plus it is quite well centered within large margins, especially clean full o.g., lightly hinged, very fine; even the great collections offered in the past few years (Weisman, Zoellner, Golin, Lyons, Floyd) either did not have a mint example of a #64 or had one that simply does not compare in quality to the exceptional copy offered here; 1996 Richter certificate, plus a 2001 PF certificate. (Image) 7,500.00

SOLD for $9,000.00

116 og 70b image#70b, 24c Steel blue, spectacularly fresh and bright, stunning prooflike color and razor-sharp impression on immaculate paper, incredibly well centered within very large margins which are most uncharacteristic to any of the 1860-61 Twenty Four Cent shades, pristine full o.g. which, in our opinion, is never hinged, simply superb. This incomparable stamp is clearly the rarest stamp in the entire sale in terms of the minute number of known mint Twenty Four Cent Steel Blues, as well as its incalculable rarity in terms of its overall quality when compared to the existing population. There is no question that this copy is the finest example known - by a wide margin - and serious students of classic U.S. philately are well aware how infrequently a mint example of this stamp makes an appearance on the auction market in any quality. In fact, after an exhaustive review of a large number of the great name U.S. collections sold over the last half century, it is incredibly revealing to note that we were able to find only three sound original gum singles ever having been offered - one in the 1956 Caspary sale (very fine centering, with top left corner perforation slightly rounded); a finely centered example in the 1970 Seymour sale; and this magnificent stamp which appeared in the 1950 sale of the famous William L. Moody III collection (H.R. Harmer, Inc.). If any other famous name collection had an example of a Scott #70b it was invariably with faults and, in nearly all instances, without gum (Newbury and Lilly collections for instance). The list of collections that did not contain any unused or mint example reads like a "who's who" of U.S. philately: Concord, Weisman, Zoellner, Golin, Lyons and Floyd, to name but a few. The remarkable state of preservation of this stamp must be seen in person to fully appreciate. Its full original gum is incredibly fresh and completely undisturbed, showing no trace of hinging even under high magnification. Its never hinged status was first confirmed when it appeared in the 1950 Moody sale were it was specifically described as "never hinged" - at a time when stamps were routinely described without any mention of hinging. It has recently been submitted to both the PSE and PF for certification. The PSE, in their certificate dated October 18, 2001, confirmed what we, and many other serious philatelists believe, that this stamp is "genuine, o.g., never hinged." On January 16, 2002 the PF rendered their opinion "genuine, o.g., previously hinged." This opinion does not come as surprise considering the PF has a reputation of being extremely reluctant to issue never hinged certificates on classic era stamps - especially high value rarities. Whether the stamp is hinged or not is actually irrelevant considering that it is beyond compare. The offering of this stamp in this year's Premier sale is one of the true "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunities. (Image) for hinged 8,000.00

119 O 72 image#72, 90c Blue, quite well centered and margined, deep luxuriant color, tied to small piece by a most unusual French anchor in dots postmark, this being the only postal marking tying the stamp to the piece, very fine and extremely handsome; an 1861 Ninety Cent value with a any type of fancy cancellation is exceptionally rare and desirable, but especially so with this unique postmark; 1996 PF certificate.
