1524 c Union Patriotic covers attractive and desirable group of 24 used items, loaded with more unusual and interesting usages, we note seven handwritten enclosures, some on patriotic letterhead, included are nine flag designs, 5 Union slogan designs, four with various Union Generals, two with all-over military camp scenes, one Jeff Davis caricature, one Washington D.C. scene and one Lincoln design, most in color with many bi-colored, while most are franked with the 3c Rose (#65) several interesting occupied Southern origin mailings can be found (Nashville, Point Pleasant Va., Port Royal S.C., etc.), condition varies as is typical for these, however this is still a fine-very fine lot with a nice selection of collectable/saleable covers. 1525 imageStriking hand colored Magnus Lettersheet with historically fascinating original dated correspondence, folded and measuring 222x278mm, this document contains a multi-colored view of the U.S. Capital building, a topographical map of Virginia between Washington and Manassas Junction and a Military Map of Maryland and Virginia, Chas. Magnus publishing imprint at bottom left, the inside of the sheet contains a marvelous handwritten correspondence dated August 25, 1861 from a Union soldier who was recently transferred to the Arlington House in Arlington Heights, Virginia, from this high location overlooking the west bank of the Potomac River, his unit was in a defensive guard of the nations capital, includes a striking "doodled" salutation on the back in the form of a sketch of Arlington Heights; Arlington House, which today sits majestically above Arlington National Cemetery, is uniquely associated with the families of Washington, Custis and Lee, having been built by George Washington Custis (a grandson of Martha Washington) between 1802 and 1817, passing on to his daughter Mary Custis Lee who had married Robert E. Lee, Arlington House was the Lee's home for 30 years, being quickly evacuated in the summer of 1861 when Union occupation was imminent; some stain spots and sensible fold reinforcement, still very fine and extremely rare intact; a significant historical document not only for military content but timing as well, as it was written literally on the heals of the fleeing family of Robert E. Lee, shortly after he made his loyal but fateful decision to follow the state of Virginia into the Confederacy. (Image) Est. 300-400
