(Major Legebarth, Commander)" examiner's docketing at top left, 3c Rose (#65) tied by blue "Delaware City Del./Jul 16" c.d.s. to orange cover, addressed to Mrs. Jas. W. Brawner, Leesburg, Virginia, extremely fine datelined prisoner enclosure accompanies; located 35 miles south of Washington, Leesburg saw the passing of both Federal and Confederate troups many times, Union troops first occupied the town in March 1862, this would explain the lack of a due marking or Confederate postage on this cover as it was sent while the town was in Northern hands, in September of 1862 Southern troops retook to city; trivial reduction and edge wear, still very fine. 1455 11 imageFort Delaware, 10c Blue, Die A (#11) and U.S. 3c Rose (#65) both with faults and erosion at the lower margins, tied by enclosed grid handstamps and "Richmond Va./Feb 24" c.d.s. to yellow cover addressed to Brookhaven, Mississippi, "Delaware City Del./Feb 12" c.d.s. at left with manuscript routing instructions "for Flag of Truce" and "Care Maj. Gen. Butler, Fortress Monroe"; letters from Federal prisons were usually cancelled with the postmark of the nearest town, if "crossing the lines", a 10c Confederate stamp was attached or it was handstamped "Due 10" and usually postmarked at Richmond, Va., which was the largest city near City Point, the point of entry into Confederate territory; general soiling, still a very fine example of a mixed-franking cover. Mitchell" on homemade blue cover/lettersheet addressed to Calhoun's Mills, S.C., flag of truce and soldier's prisoner of war endorsements, 3c Rose (#65) tied by striking blue segmented cork cancel with matching "Sandusky O/Nov 3" c.d.s., "Richmond Va./Nov 16 1863" transit c.d.s. also ties stamp, straightline "Due 10" at left, very unusual contemporarily glued partial envelope to letter sheet, with fascinating contents where the prisoner discusses his evasion of Federal troops, "was taken after a long & tedious journey after crossing the whole state of Miss in a mule wagon 5 miles from the Miss River by a lot of Yankees", the prison layout and treatment, some sensible fold reinforcement, very fine for this; an extremely attractive and unusual cover than gives great insight into camp layout and prisoner treatment at Johnson's Island.
